The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) has launched a new initiative, Jipmer Centre for Counselling, Assistance, Resilience and Empowerment of Students (J-CARES), aimed at strengthening the mental well-being, resilience and emotional support among its students and fostering a healthy and supportive learning environment.
Established under the guidance of Director Vir Singh Negi, J-CARES seeks to provide comprehensive and accessible mental support to students and promote a culture of early help-seeking, resilience and well-being within the institution.
As part of the initiative, the THINK RIGHT Sessions — a year-long holistic wellness programme for students was inaugurated by Dean (Academic) Vikram Kate recently.
According to Jipmer, the THINK RIGHT programme adopts a holistic approach to student wellness, covering key areas, such as stress management, emotional regulation, mindfulness, effective communication, time management, resilience building, healthy lifestyle practices, sleep hygiene, yoga, relaxation and physical activity.
The programme also encourages students to engage in cultural, recreational and sports activities as an integral part of maintaining physical, emotional and social well-being.
J-CARES has been established in line with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, for strengthening institutional mental health support systems and suicide prevention initiatives.
Through counselling, awareness programmes, prevention interventions and peer and institutional support, J-CARES aims to foster an environment where students feel supported, heard and encouraged to seek help whenever required. Swaroop Kumar Sahu, Coordinator, J-CARES, participated.
