SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Its a time to raise awareness about mental health, share resources for people in crisis, and to break the stigma around suicide.
On this week’s Inside KELOLAND, we sit down with Thomas Otten, the Vice President of Avera Behavioral Health, to talk about the signs and symptoms of suicidal ideation, and the importance of asking the hard questions.
Then, we talk with the director of the Helpline Center’s 988 Hotline, Scott Wilson, about the resources available for people who are in crisis and having thoughts of suicide, as well as National 988 Day coming up.
After that, the 437 Project run across South Dakota kicks off this month. W hear from our own Dan Santella about his past experience doing the relay.
And finally, we hear from a father-daughter duo that are taking part in the 437 Project this year, and get their perspective on why they are taking on the challenge.
