New research from Marley shows that whilst some progress is being made to raise awareness of mental health issues among roofing contractors, there are still steps to be taken to support workers.

From a poll of roofing contractors*, well over two thirds (70%) of roofers say they have not received guidance, training and support for mental health and wellbeing from their employer. However, two thirds (66%) recognise they should do more to support their own mental health.

And with increased awareness of mental health, the findings show contractors are also taking the issue seriously.

According to the survey, 80% of roofers are now more aware of their own mental health than a few years ago. However, this is not translating to speaking out about how they feel with almost two thirds (62%) saying they do not discuss their mental health with fellow workers.

The challenges of working in the winter are also a factor affecting how roofers feel. 79% say cold and dark conditions sometimes or always affect their mental health and 86% say they sometimes or always struggle with work motivation when temperatures drop.

Asked what their biggest physical challenges were of working outdoors in winter months, more than a quarter (27%) cited the shorter working days, plus safety concerns from extreme weather and cold weather conditions

From a safety perspective, more than a third (37%) say they have experienced injuries and a health issue related to working outside in the cold. But a small majority (52%) say they have received guidance or training for safe working in winter.

Dan Redfern, Head of Marketing Communications for Marley, comments: “Our survey highlights the importance of continued focus on mental health and general wellbeing across the roofing trade. While it’s reassuring that many roofers are more aware of their mental health compared to previous years, we would urge more companies to address the issue so the guidance, training and support is in place when needed.”

“That is why Marley is proud to partner with TOUGH TO TALK, a pioneering charity dedicated to promoting mental health awareness amongst men. Our collaboration is part of Marley’s wider Winter Wellness campaign which aims to drive meaningful connection with roofers, so they are better able to deal with winter working issues.”

Reach out for help from TOUGH TO TALK

Steve Whittle, founder of TOUGH TO TALK, comments: “Winter can be a hard time for roofers and Marley’s poll underlines some of the mental and physical health issues that need to be spoken about and acted upon. We encourage those in the construction trade to reach out for the support and help that is available.”

TOUGH TO TALK offers a number of top everyday tips on its website which can help tradespeople overcome their mental health struggles and feel better. They include:

    • Invest in good quality winter wear to keep warm and dry in challenging conditions.
    • Take regular breaks and have warm food and drinks to maintain energy
    • Move regularly and take shorts walks stay warm an alert
    • Warm up your mind like your muscles – Just like you stretch and warm up your body to prevent injuries, take a few minutes to mentally prepare for the day. Practice deep breathing or set a positive intention – it can help you stay focused and reduce stress.
    • Layer up for emotional resilience – You wouldn’t head out without the right gear to protect against the cold, so don’t forget to “layer up” emotionally. Build a support system of colleagues, friends, or family you can talk to when things feel tough.
    • Ask for help – It’s a Strength, Not a Weakness – Just like you’d call for backup on a heavy lift, don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re struggling emotionally. Whether it’s a mate, a manager, or a professional, reaching out shows strength and keeps you safe.
