Lagos State Govt. Seeks FG’s Support In Addressing Industrial Pollution

………….”Assistive Technology is Not a Luxury, But Essential, a Right” – Hon. Ayuba Gufwan.

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has welcomed the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on Access to Assistive Technology, describing it as a historic milestone in the global effort to advance inclusion, equity, and opportunity for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

The resolution, presented by Pakistan and co-sponsored by more than 40 Member States was adopted by consensus on 2nd September 2026. It represents a significant international commitment to recognizing assistive technology as an essential component of sustainable development, universal health coverage, and the realization of the rights of Persons with Disabilities and older persons.

The Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan said the resolution reinforces Nigeria’s obligations under the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act and aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

In his words: “Assistive technology is not a luxury. It is an essential enabler of participation and independent living. From wheelchairs and hearing aids to screen readers and prosthetics, appropriate assistive products and services support access to education, employment, healthcare, communication, and community life. They also help to break down barriers that contribute to poverty and social exclusion.”

Hon. Gufwan noted that the resolution is particularly relevant to Nigeria, where strengthening access to appropriate, affordable, and quality-assured assistive technology remains critical to the full participation of PWDs in national development.

He further commended the UN for emphasizing the integration of assistive technology into national health, education, labour, and social protection systems. He also highlighted the importance of sustainable financing, local production, innovation, training of specialized personnel, and effective supply chains to ensure that assistive technology reaches those who need it most.

“The Commission also recognizes the need to strengthen data collection, research, and innovation to support evidence-based planning and a better understanding of assistive technology needs in Nigeria,” he added.

The Executive Secretary reaffirmed NCPWD’s commitment to working with development partners, universities, manufacturers, rehabilitation professionals, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), and other stakeholders to expand access to assistive technology across the 36 States and the FCT.

“This UN resolution gives us renewed momentum. NCPWD will continue to champion policies, partnerships, and programmes that ensure no Nigerian is left behind because of lack of access to the right assistive device,” Hon. Gufwan concluded.
