Who is getting a Social Security payment this Wednesday, July 8?

Millions of Americans who receive benefits from the Social Security Administration will receive their next monthly payment on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, but not everyone is included in that payment cycle.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a staggered payment schedule for most retirement, survivor and disability beneficiaries.

Stimulus checks update: How do payments vary between states?

Rather than issuing every payment on the same day each month, the agency distributes benefits based primarily on a recipient’s birth date, helping streamline the payment process.

For July, the first Wednesday payment falls on July 8, and it is reserved for one specific group of beneficiaries.

Anyone receiving Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits whose birthday falls between the 1st and the 10th of any month is scheduled to receive their payment on Wednesday, July 8, provided they began collecting benefits after May 1997.

Direct deposits are typically available on the scheduled payment date, although the exact time funds appear in an account may vary depending on an individual’s bank or financial institution.

Beneficiaries whose birthdays fall later in the month will receive their payments on subsequent Wednesdays.

Those born between the 11th and 20th are scheduled to receive benefits on the third Wednesday of the month, while recipients born between the 21st and 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday.

The staggered calendar has been used by the SSA for decades and remains the standard payment system for most beneficiaries.

    However, there are important exceptions.

Individuals who started receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 generally receive their monthly payment on the third day of each month.

Likewise, people who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) typically follow a different payment schedule established by the agency.

Understanding the Social Security payment calendar

The SSA administers one of the largest benefit programs in the United States, distributing monthly payments to tens of millions of retired workers, people with disabilities, surviving spouses and eligible family members.

Because such a large number of payments must be processed every month, dividing recipients into different payment groups helps reduce administrative strain while ensuring funds are delivered consistently.

For most beneficiaries, the payment schedule follows this pattern:

    – Birthdays from the 1st through the 10th: Second Wednesday of the month.

    – Birthdays from the 11th through the 20th: Third Wednesday.

    – Birthdays from the 21st through the 31st: Fourth Wednesday.

Meanwhile, SSI recipients generally receive their monthly payment on the first day of each month, unless that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday.

In those situations, payments are typically issued on the preceding business day.

The SSA encourages beneficiaries to enroll in direct deposit, which remains the fastest and most secure method of receiving benefits.

Payments can also be deposited onto the agency’s Direct Express debit card for recipients who do not maintain a traditional bank account.

If a scheduled payment does not arrive on time, the SSA advises beneficiaries to first contact their bank or financial institution.

Because financial institutions sometimes require additional processing time, recipients are generally encouraged to wait at least three mailing or business days before reporting a missing payment to the agency.

In addition to retirement benefits, the SSA administers programs that provide financial assistance to disabled workers, survivors of deceased workers and eligible dependents.

Monthly benefit amounts vary depending on an individual’s earnings history, retirement age and eligibility category.

For those expecting a payment on Wednesday, July 8, the key qualification is straightforward: beneficiaries who began receiving Social Security after May 1997 and whose birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of the month are scheduled to receive their July benefit on that date.

Everyone else will continue to follow the SSA’s regular monthly payment calendar based on their birth date or benefit type.
