Millions of Americans who rely on Social Security benefits are receiving payments throughout March. But the exact day your check arrives depends largely on your birthday and when you first began collecting benefits.

The Social Security Administration distributes retirement, disability and survivor benefits to more than 70 million people nationwide on a staggered monthly schedule.

Most recipients receive payments on Wednesday, based on their birth date, according to the agency’s official benefit calendar.

That means Social Security checks for March 2026 arrive on four different dates depending on the recipient.

According to the SSA payment calendar, here’s the schedule for March:

    • March 3: People who began receiving Social Security before May 1997, or those who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income.

    • March 11: Recipients with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of any month.

    • March 18: Recipients with birthdays between the 11th and 20th.

    • March 25: Recipients with birthdays between the 21st and 31st.

The staggered schedule allows the agency to distribute payments throughout the month rather than sending all checks at once.

People who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) may have noticed they didn’t get paid this month.

SSI benefits are normally issued on the first day of the month. But when the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment is sent on the previous business day, according to the SSA.

Because March 1, 2026, fell on a Sunday, the March SSI payment was issued early on Feb. 27, meaning recipients did not receive a payment in March.

This type of calendar adjustment happens several times a year when the first of the month lands on a weekend or holiday.

Most retirement, disability and survivor benefits follow a simple rule based on the recipient’s birth date:

    • Birthdays 1st–10th: Paid on the second Wednesday of the month

    • Birthdays 11th–20th: Paid on the third Wednesday

    • Birthdays 21st–31st: Paid on the fourth Wednesday

People who began receiving benefits before May 1997 generally receive their payments on the third day of each month instead.

SSI benefits follow a separate schedule and are typically issued on the first day of the month unless the date falls on a weekend or holiday.

The Social Security Administration advises recipients to wait three mailing days before reporting a missing payment. If a deposit still has not arrived, beneficiaries can contact the agency directly or check their payment status through their online Social Security account.
