The Cape Town International Kite Festival returns this October as a vivid kaleidoscope takes over the Mother City skyline, reminding South Africans that mental health deserves a place in the open. Massive, intricate creations—from giant marine creatures to abstract geometric shapes—will dance above the ground in a celebration of hope, connection, and community.

Now in its 32nd year, Africa’s oldest kite festival returns to Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery on 24 and 25 October 2026. Hosted by Cape Mental Health, the festival invites South Africans to #ColourTheSky, combining a weekend of family entertainment with meaningful community dialogue around psychological well-being.

    The Reality Behind the Canvas

The need for open discussion around mental health has never been clearer. Data from the South African Stress and Health (SASH) study indicates that 16.5% of South African adults experience a common mental disorder in any given 12-month period, with over 30% affected across their lifetime. Following the pandemic, estimates presented at the South African Mental Health Conference noted that common mental health conditions have increased three- to seven-fold.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than one billion people live with a mental health condition, with pervasive social stigma remaining one of the greatest obstacles to seeking care.

“A kite does not rise because the wind is absent. It rises because it learns to work with the wind. It bends, pulls, dips, and climbs—and somehow finds its way upwards.”

“Why do we fly? We fly because we believe that hope should always have somewhere to go,” says Professor Ingrid Daniels, CEO of Cape Mental Health. “The kite is a beautiful symbol of resilience. It reminds us that even when life brings difficult winds, we can find ways to rise, but we cannot do that alone. We need connection, compassion, support, and communities where people feel safe enough to speak about how they are really doing.”

    Turning Awareness into Impact

Since launching in 1994, the festival has grown into a flagship fundraising event. Every ticket purchased directly funds Cape Mental Health’s network of community interventions, supporting over 71,000 service users and family members across the Western Cape through 22 specialized mental health intervention programmes.

Attendees can expect a vibrant lineup featuring international and local kite flyers, food stalls, family-friendly entertainment, and interactive spaces designed to foster open conversations.
