Millions of Americans rely on Social Security services every day, whether they are applying for benefits, updating personal information, or seeking assistance with retirement, disability, or Medicare-related questions.

As Juneteenth continues to grow in national significance, many beneficiaries are wondering whether Social Security offices are open on the holiday in 2026.

Social Security: When is COLA announced, how is it determined and how much can people expect?M.C.

    The short answer is no.

Social Security Administration (SSA) offices across the United States are closed on Juneteenth, which is recognized as a federal holiday.

In 2026, Juneteenth falls on Friday, June 19, meaning Social Security field offices, hearing offices, and most in-person government services operated by the agency are not available that day.

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 when legislation signed into law officially recognized June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

The holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Because the SSA follows the federal government’s holiday schedule, Juneteenth is one of the agency’s annual closures alongside holidays such as New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

While physical offices are closed, beneficiaries are not entirely cut off from services. Many online tools remain available throughout the holiday.

Individuals can still access their personal “my Social Security” accounts to review earnings records, check benefit information, request replacement Social Security cards in participating states, update direct deposit information, and perform several other tasks online.

Telephone services, however, may be limited due to the federal holiday closure, and individuals who require direct assistance from SSA representatives may need to wait until offices reopen on the next business day.

Online services remain available despite office closures

Although office closures can sometimes create confusion, the Social Security Administration has steadily expanded its digital offerings over the last decade.

As a result, many routine transactions no longer require an in-person visit.

This has become particularly important as the agency continues to handle a growing number of beneficiaries.

According to SSA data, tens of millions of Americans receive retirement, disability, or survivor benefits each month, placing significant demand on agency resources.

For beneficiaries expecting payments around Juneteenth, the holiday generally does not affect regularly scheduled Social Security benefit deposits.

Payments are typically distributed according to the agency’s established monthly calendar. However, when a payment date coincides with a federal holiday or weekend, benefits are usually issued on the preceding business day.

Experts often advise recipients to monitor their payment schedules carefully during holiday periods and review official SSA announcements if questions arise.

The holiday closure also serves as a reminder for beneficiaries planning office visits.

Anyone needing assistance with applications, appeals, Medicare enrollment questions, or benefit adjustments should schedule appointments around the closure to avoid delays.

As Juneteenth becomes more firmly established within the federal holiday calendar, awareness of government office schedules has become increasingly important.

For Social Security recipients and future beneficiaries alike, knowing when offices are closed can help avoid unnecessary trips and ensure important business is handled in a timely manner.

In 2026, Social Security offices will remain closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.

However, many of the agency’s online services will continue operating, allowing beneficiaries to access essential information and complete routine tasks from home while the holiday is observed nationwide.
