Social Security recipients are beginning to look ahead to 2027 as new inflation data provides a clearer picture of how much benefits could rise next year.

The latest projection from the Senior Citizens League puts the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) at 3.6%. That estimate is slightly above the 3.5% projection published by AARP using earlier inflation data, but neither figure is official yet.

Social Security: When is COLA announced, how is it determined and how much can people expect?M.C.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will calculate the final COLA using Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) data from July, August and September.

The agency is expected to announce the official adjustment in October, with the increase applying to benefits paid in January 2027.

That means retirees should treat the current projections as estimates rather than guaranteed increases.

For someone receiving the maximum 2026 retirement benefit of $5,181 per month at age 70, a 3.6% increase would produce an illustrative payment of about $5,368 per month in 2027. That’s an increase of roughly $187 per month, or about $2,244 over a full year.

However, that calculation should not be interpreted as the final 2027 maximum benefit. The actual maximum payment for people newly claiming benefits can change based on the Social Security benefit formula and other annual adjustments.

Who can actually receive the maximum Social Security benefit?

The maximum Social Security check is reserved for a relatively small group of workers. Simply having a high salary shortly before retirement isn’t enough.

To qualify for the maximum retirement benefit, a worker generally needs to have earned at or above Social Security‘s maximum taxable earnings level for many years and claim benefits at an age that produces the largest possible payment.

The SSA’s own examples show how strongly claiming age affects the benefit. A worker with maximum taxable earnings throughout their career can receive substantially more by waiting until age 70 rather than claiming at 62.

The distinction is important because the COLA applies to existing benefit amounts. It does not suddenly give every recipient the maximum payment.

For example, a retiree receiving $2,000 per month who receives a 3.6% COLA would see an increase of approximately $72, bringing the payment to about $2,072. Someone receiving $3,000 would gain approximately $108 and move to roughly $3,108.

The latest estimates therefore matter more as a percentage than as a single universal dollar amount.

Recent data also shows why projections have been changing. The 2026 COLA was 2.8%, while the latest 3.6% estimate would represent the largest increase since the 8.7% adjustment associated with 2023 benefits. It would still be nowhere near the record 14.3% COLA in 1981, when inflation was dramatically higher.

Another important consideration is Medicare. For many beneficiaries, Medicare premiums are deducted directly from Social Security payments, meaning the amount that ultimately reaches a bank account can differ from the gross benefit increase.

The SSA says the official 2027 COLA will not be known until the October announcement.

For now, 3.6% is a useful working estimate, while AARP’s 3.5% projection demonstrates how quickly forecasts can move as new inflation figures arrive.

If the 3.6% projection holds, a person already receiving $5,181 a month could see a payment of approximately $5,368, but only people who already qualify for the maximum benefit will be in that position. For most retirees, the actual increase will depend on their individual Social Security benefit.

The final number will come after September’s inflation data is available and the SSA completes its calculation in October.
