Teen sculptor the youngest to join national showcase event

A 14-year-old sculptor from Western Australia’s Margaret River region has become the youngest artist to participate in Australia’s largest open-studio event, creating intricate animal sculptures from salvaged metal.

Charlie Guiver describes his creative process as “a bit like a puzzle”, welding each piece of scrap metal into place to bring his designs to life.

Charlie recently sold a large wolf sculpture for $8,000 and hopes to travel to Europe to learn traditional blacksmithing techniques.

Trumpeter’s quick thinking saves World Series tribute

A veteran trumpeter, considered something of a good-luck charm for MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks, has made an impressive recovery after his trumpet malfunctioned during a special celebration of the team’s 2001 World Series championship.

Dr Jesse McGuire, 68, was performing the US national anthem when his trumpet stopped working halfway through, prompting him to grab the microphone and seamlessly sing the rest of the song.

McGuire received a standing ovation from the crowd for his quick thinking and memorable save.

Chile becomes first South American country to eliminate rabies

Chile has become the first country in South America to eliminate dog-transmitted human rabies as a public health problem, according to the World Health Organization.

The milestone follows decades of widespread dog vaccination, disease surveillance and improved access to treatment for people bitten by potentially infected animals.

WHO says Chile’s achievement is a testament to the country’s work across vaccination, surveillance and access to care.

100-year-old dancer raises money for Alzheimer’s research

A 100-year-old UK man has led hundreds of people in a charity flash mob in Worcester, England, to raise money for Alzheimer’s research.

Bernard Gilbert, whose nursing home dance videos have attracted more than 1.5 million views online, directed the crowd in a line dance to Roger Miller’s King of the Road.

Bernard says dancing keeps him physically and mentally active, describing it as something that brings him “alive”.
