WE have all had that one dreadful experience at the dentist. Whether it was suffering from tooth decay after munching on sugary treats or feeling self-conscious about a casual comment on bad breath, many Filipinos have historically turned to frugality rather than face their fear of professional dentists. The result? An overreliance on painkillers for toothaches and mindlessly continuing improper dental hygiene habits.

However, dental visits are undergoing a modern shift. Around the world, oral health is steadily becoming an essential act of self-care and wellness — right alongside personalized skin care routines and modern fitness habits.

Filipinos are officially moving away from the old “fix-it-when-it-breaks” attitude and abandoning outdated standards of unnaturally stark white teeth. Today, the focus is on achieving an ideal smile that is healthy, functional and tailored to individual facial features and personality.

That is precisely where Dentacare comes in.

“The goal isn’t to create the same smile for everyone but to enhance each person’s unique appearance with results that look effortless and natural,” says Dra. Ma. Corazon Josefina “Joanna” Villadolid-Cristi, chief dentist and COO at Dentacare.

Dentacare specializes in natural enhancement — a thoughtful redesign of the right smile for every individual. Instead of chasing fleeting social media trends or forcing a specific shade, the clinic evaluates gum health, tooth structure, facial proportions and long-term sustainability.

For Dentacare, “the best smile isn’t the one that looks like someone else’s, but the one that looks like the best version of you.”

This same “best version of you” mindset carries over to dental implants, dentures and veneers because at Dentacare, fixing your smile and upgrading it go hand in hand. If you’re missing teeth, its implant game is all about precision; so you can chew, talk and laugh with comfort and confidence.

It also offers dentures, ensuring a snug fit that stays put — no more worrying about slipping mid-conversation). Dentacare’s veneers are also a sought-after service, crafted to look like your own teeth on their best day — thin, translucent and totally believable.

Dental care as an everyday investment

Dentacare aims to position dental services as a natural part of a person’s lifestyle rather than a last resort for pain management. They put regular cleanings, gum care, alignments and preventive treatments as routine wellness investments — much like maintaining a gym membership or wearing daily sunscreen.

Patients are greeted with a warm, calming atmosphere the moment they step into a clinic, supported by a dental team trained to communicate with empathy and compassion.

With 26 branches across accessible locations — primarily inside major malls in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces — getting quality care fits seamlessly into daily life. To ensure seamless service for all clients, one location even employs a Mandarin-speaking staff to accommodate Chinese locals and tourists.

Despite offering high-tech equipment and a skilled team of experts, Dentacare maintains some of the most competitive pricing in the Metro. This combination of clinical excellence and accessibility is why many overseas Filipino workers trust Dentacare for their dental needs when returning home.

    Grounded leadership and people-first care

At the heart of the business, Dentacare ensures that every branch is fully staffed with qualified professionals.

“If there’s no dentist, there’s definitely no business at all,” adds Villadolid-Cristi.

A second-generation dentist from the Villadolid family and a graduate of New York University’s premier College of Dentistry, Villadolid-Cristi guided Dentacare’s transition from a single clinic on Timog Avenue into an expanding network caring for thousands of patients across the country. While she balances branch performance reviews and operational strategy, she still actively treats patients three days a week to stay connected to clinical practice.

Data-guided decisions and a people-first approach remain core to Dentacare’s operations. Under Villadolid-Cristi’s leadership, the focus is on collective team success built through clear expectations, timely feedback and professional recognition. This culture translates directly to patient care, where clients experience genuine compassion and accountability from every dentist, hygienist and staff member.

Oral care essentials: Expert advice from Villadolid-Cristi

What would you say a regular visit or checkup with a dentist would be?

“If you have good and well-maintained oral health, your visit should be at least twice a year. For those who developed a gum disease or mild gingivitis to a progressive form; then we suggest you visit every three months to do a deep cleaning, deep scaling.”

How often would you recommend whitening and deep cleaning?

“Deep cleaning ideally should be every three months but that is if you have these deep pockets from a prolonged orthodontic procedure. With the teeth-whitening ideally should be like twice a year only, but if you are able to maintain the whiteness, some patients could just go once a year. For whitening, if you want to achieve the whitest or you have this whiteness in your mind that you want to achieve, try to reach it first, and then you just maintain it every 6 months.”

Do you recommend that people get whitening?

“Yes, it doesn’t just whiten your teeth; it also removes the plaque that develops on top of your enamel.”

What is one dental habit or tool you personally do to keep your teeth healthy, white and fresh?

“Interdental flossing, or another tool like water floss.”

What’s a common oral mistake that you see a lot of people doing?

“The most common mistake I see people make is brushing harder, really harder, instead of brushing better while completely neglecting the spaces of their teeth or in-between the teeth. It’s like brushing your teeth, but if you forget or neglect to floss, you won’t be able to clean your teeth just by merely brushing; you have to do flossing after.”

Setting a new standard in dentistry

Looking ahead, Villadolid-Cristi envisions success beyond simply expanding branch counts. The goal is to establish Dentacare as a national benchmark for accessible, technology-enabled and consistently excellent dentistry while serving as a platform for clinical training, leadership and innovation for the next generation of Filipino dentists.

“It’s not really for us dentists to be famous but for the brand to be a household name,” she says, driven by a commitment to raise health standards across the industry for local patients and international visitors alike.
