Power Assist Devices for Wheelchairs, and Custom Aids for Brain Lesion Disabilities
For Seoul Residents with Disabilities, Starting July 27

On July 27, Seoul City announced the launch of a long-term rental project for assistive devices to support the mobility of people with disabilities.

The “Long-Term Rental Project for Power Assist Devices for Manual Wheelchairs” is a sub-project under the “2530 Daily Vitality Project for People with Disabilities,” aiming to support independent and efficient mobility for people with disabilities.

A power assist device for a manual wheelchair is an assistive device that attaches to a manual wheelchair, allowing users to travel more conveniently using electric power. Propelling a manual wheelchair places considerable strain on the shoulders and elbows, often causing musculoskeletal pain and increased physical burden. As a result, demand for power assist devices has grown, and organizations for people with disabilities have consistently requested support.

Seoul City plans to provide a set, consisting of a manual wheelchair and a matching power assist device, to 40 people. As physically disabled individuals—especially those with brain lesions—often need to replace assistive devices throughout their lives due to changes in their physical condition, but may be financially vulnerable and burdened by the cost, the city is also running a “Custom Assistive Device Long-Term Rental Project for People with Brain Lesions.”

People with brain lesions require a variety of assistive devices, including mobility aids, postural support devices, and daily living aids. The type and number of assistive devices needed may vary according to age, severity of disability, individual changes in physical function, and living environment. The long-term rental project for custom assistive devices for people with brain lesions has prepared a range of devices—such as car seats for mobility, exercise equipment for therapy and training, stair lift cars to assist with movement, and posture support devices—so that individuals can choose what suits their needs. The program aims to loan these devices to 96 recipients.

In particular, the Seoul Assistive Device Center, which operates the program, will assign assistive technology specialists to provide detailed guidance from device selection to usage, and will conduct regular usability evaluations.

Eligibility for the power assist devices for manual wheelchairs includes registered residents of Seoul with physical, brain lesion, heart, or respiratory disabilities. Eligibility for custom assistive devices for people with brain lesions is limited to registered residents of Seoul with brain lesions. Applications can be submitted in person at Seoul Assistive Device Centers in each district or via email from July 27 until August 20.

Jinwoo Jeong, Seoul City Welfare Policy Chief, stated, “We expect that this long-term rental initiative will provide meaningful support to people with disabilities who have struggled to access suitable assistive devices due to financial constraints. We will work to promote independent living and social participation for people with disabilities through professional assistive technology services and thorough ongoing management.”
