    Study links word sounds to memory

    A new linguistics study suggests that the sound of a word itself – independent of its meaning – can make it more memorable.

    The research out of the University of Vienna tested artificial pseudowords – without attached meaning – and found that the ones participants remembered best were also those they rated as most aesthetic, pointing to an intrinsic link between how words sound and how they stick in memory.

    The study pointed to implications for language learning, teaching, and marketing, and suggested more research may offer insights into the evolution of languages.

    Anonymous donation a life saver for young cancer patient

    A stem-cell transplant from an anonymous donor has saved the life of a 12 year old boy, who was diagnosed with leukaemia soon after his mother died.

    “DonDon” Love had experienced his fair share of tragedy in his short life, even before being diagnosed with cancer early last year.

    After months of chemotherapy and with no sibling stem cell match available, DonDon has been declared cancer-free thanks to the generosity of a stranger.

    Cancer survival rates milestone

    “DonDon’s” story reflects news of survival rates improving across the world, with the American Cancer Society reporting seven in ten people now live at least five years after their diagnosis

    In the mid-1970s, the 5-year cancer survival rate in the United States was below 50 percent.

    This record-high is being attributed to advances in treatments, early screening, and better supportive care.

    Mum thanks passersby who stopped to help pull her daughter from burning car

    A young mum in Wales has had an emotional reunion with the two men she says saved her nine-month-old’s life, pulling her from her carseat just moments before the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

    Wesley Beynon and his uncle Marc Willding stopped to help when they spotted Alex waving her arms on the side of a highway – forcing their way into the smoke-filled car and rescuing baby Lilah as the flames took hold.

    Wesley described it as a terrifying experience, coming within 30 seconds of real tragedy.
