Brenda Davis launches The Othniel Project, an education/coaching initiative focused on literacy, families, and leadership for social change.

Columbia, Maryland, United States, October 30, 2026 — Brenda Davis, an educator, leadership design consultant, speaker, health and life coach, and researcher, has launched The Othniel Project, an education initiative focused on literacy, family engagement, leadership, and constructive social change. The project brings together areas of Davis’ professional work in education, as the Omega Graduate School Chief Student Success Officer, social science research, leadership development, coaching, and family-school relationships, with an emphasis on the connections between literacy, social capital, behavioral health, and well-being.

The Othniel Project addresses literacy, relationships, and leadership as related areas of human development and well-being. Its framework includes developmental reading, social-emotional learning, behavioral health, family and community relationships, and collaboration among parents, educators, school leaders, and communities. The initiative also considers the family as an organization, with attention to relationships, communication, learning, and shared responsibility. This perspective recognizes the family’s role in shaping early learning, interpersonal skills, social connections, and the conditions that support individual and collective development.

Davis’ work draws on core competencies in leadership, family social capital, wellness, communication, collaboration, literacy, and problem-solving. These areas inform the project’s broader mission of supporting leaders, families, students, and educators in pursuing success and excellence across academic, social, and personal dimensions of life. The framework also considers how truth, well-being, and constructive relationships contribute to the capacity to learn, lead, and participate in communities.

“Literacy gives people a way to access information, communicate, and participate in their communities,” Davis states. The project’s approach places literacy within the broader context of relationships, leadership, and the conditions that support well-being and abundant living in contemporary society.

The family’s role is another central consideration. The Othniel Project includes a seven-week academy for parents and children that addresses family participation in education and communication with schools. The academy’s focus reflects the importance of family leadership, shared responsibility, communication, and collaboration in supporting children’s learning and development. It also considers how families can strengthen relationships and build the social connections that help them engage with educational institutions and their wider communities.

The project’s family-school focus includes opportunities for parents and families to work with teachers, school leaders, and district leaders. This work considers social capital, the relationships, connections, and shared resources that can support individual and collective progress, as one factor in efforts to improve student performance, particularly in lower-performing school settings. The project’s goals include advancing literacy outcomes, including reading, while giving attention to children’s behavioral health and overall well-being.

Davis’ research interests include school reform, social science, literacy, leadership, family relationships, and education, as well as behavioral health and well-being. Through The Othniel Project, these areas are considered through cultural and psychological perspectives within a global education context. The project’s perspective also considers how family relationships, community participation, and collaboration across institutions relate to learning and human development in different settings.

“Education involves students, families, educators, and community members, each bringing different experiences and perspectives,” Davis says. “Research and conversation can provide useful ways to understand those experiences and consider how people can participate in human development.”

Leadership is another area addressed through The Othniel Project. The initiative includes leadership education for teachers and educators across grade school, high school, and college settings. Its framework considers the role of educators in school communities and the relationship between leadership, learning environments, and collaboration. It also recognizes the connection between effective leadership, communication, problem-solving, and the creation of environments that support learning and well-being.

Beyond her work in K-12 education, Davis serves as the chief student success officer at Omega Graduate School. In this role, she provides academic coaching to doctoral students in research, academic development, and leadership, helping them align scholarly work with practical application. Her position applies The Othniel Project’s educational framework to graduate students and emerging leaders, with a focus on critical thinking, research skills, and leadership development.

The project incorporates coach-style teaching, tutoring, academic coaching, family organization coaching, and a train-the-trainer approach. Davis’ methods draw from her work with the Johns Hopkins School of Education Alumni Council, Wycliffe Hall (Oxford, England), the Harvard School of Education Think Tank on Global Education (2011), and the Omega Graduate School American Center for Research in the Social Sciences.

Connectedness and global education also form part of the project’s broader educational perspective. This area includes consideration of cultural perspectives, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas across educational communities. Davis’ work examines how these perspectives relate to literacy, human relationships, leadership, behavioral health, and well-being in different settings.

Through The Othniel Project, these areas are brought into a shared framework for considering the relationships among literacy, family and community social capital, leadership, and well-being. The initiative’s focus is on how these connections may inform educational development and broader efforts toward constructive social change.
