Citizen awareness essential along with RCC initiatives to prevent dengue

RAJSHAHI, Sept 15, 2026 (BSS) – Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has taken various initiatives to protect city residents from the risk of dengue, while speakers at a discussion today stressed the need for greater public awareness alongside the city corporation’s efforts.
An exchange meeting on dengue prevention, cleanliness drives and public awareness was held at the City Hall meeting room of Nagar Bhaban, with RCC Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton attending as the chief guest.
Specialist doctors, entomologists, health workers and other concerned officials attended the meeting.
The speakers said personal awareness and active participation of citizens are essential alongside the initiatives taken by the city corporation to prevent dengue.
They said Aedes mosquitoes usually breed in stagnant, clear water. Therefore, residents should regularly inspect and clean areas around their homes, including yards, rooftops, balconies, under-construction buildings and other places where water may accumulate.
They urged city residents to clean their homes and surrounding areas at least once a week and remove potential breeding grounds such as discarded containers, tubs, coconut shells and old tyres.
RCC Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton said, “We have taken various initiatives to keep city residents safe from the risk of dengue. We all have to work together. With the cooperation of city residents, we want to build a clean, safe and dengue-free Rajshahi city.”
He said public awareness campaigns, destruction of mosquito breeding grounds, cleanliness drives and mosquito-control activities have been intensified to prevent dengue.
“City residents also urged to play a vital role in preventing dengue,” he added.
RCC Chief Executive Officer Rezaul Karim presided over the meeting, while Deputy Registrar of Rajshahi Medical University Dr Mofakharul Islam attended as the special guest.
Dr Mofakharul Islam said everyone should play a role in creating public awareness to prevent dengue.
Professor Dr Azizul Haque Azad, Head of the Department of Medicine at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), said a separate ward has been arranged at the hospital due to the increase in dengue cases.
He said dengue is a viral disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and infection can occur from the bite of an infected mosquito during both daytime and nighttime.
Umme Habiba, District Entomologist of the Civil Surgeon’s Office, and Abdul Bari, Entomological Technician of the Divisional Director of Health Office, presented an overview of the dengue situation at the meeting.
Selim Reza Ranju, Deputy Chief Cleaning Officer of RCC, presented the measures taken by the city corporation to prevent dengue.
