A renewed push by some Republicans for a policy change might impact Social
    Security senior
benefits and change retirement plans for some individuals. With the issue of
Social Security trust fund insolvency looming, some Republicans are advocating
to raise the program’s full retirement age, but Democrats are firmly pushing
back. Legislators are under pressure to implement a solution to address the
    program’s coming financial shortfall.

If you or a loved one are nearing retirement age, here’s how raising the full
    retirement age might affect you.

    Addressing Social Security’s insolvency

The 2026 Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees report sheds light on
how urgent the insolvency issue is. The 2026 report projects that the Old-Age
and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund may become insolvent by the fourth
quarter of 2032, which is one quarter earlier than the 2025 report projected.

Once the OASI trust fund becomes insolvent, Social Security’s income from
payroll taxes would only be able to pay about 78% of the total scheduled
benefits, unless Congress acts to preserve the program. That 2032 deadline is
putting politically charged options, like raising the retirement age, back on
the table as legislators work to find a solution.

    What Republicans have said

Administration officials and GOP lawmakers have made numerous comments
referencing the possibility of raising the Social Security full retirement age.

Mehmet Oz, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator, has commented that Americans could work longer before they retire.

Such comments prompted Senator Elizabeth Warren and other Democrats to write a
formal letter requesting the Trump administration clarify its stance on raising
the retirement age. The letter referenced Republicans’ history of attempting to
    raise the retirement age.

How raising the retirement age might impact beneficiaries

The current full retirement age is 67 for individuals born in 1960 or later; at
that age, individuals may claim their full Social Security benefits. If that age
were increased, people would have to wait longer to claim their full benefits.

Warren reports that if the retirement age were raised by two years, it might
reduce monthly retirement benefits by approximately 17% to 35%, or by $345 to
    $741 per month.

Increasing the retirement age may also significantly impact lower-income
individuals, since wealthier individuals often live longer and would be able to
collect benefits for longer periods of time. Additionally, individuals who work
physically demanding jobs might not be able to work until age 69, possibly
forcing them to claim reduced benefits early.

    Previous retirement age increases

The Social Security retirement age has been previously increased. When the
Social Security program was created in the 1930s, the retirement age was set at
    65. In 1983, Congress passed legislation to gradually increase the age from 65
to 67, and the change was slowly phased in. The change was partially prompted by
the fact that the average lifespan had increased, and it was also an effort to
financially strengthen the Social Security program.

The outlook on raising the retirement age

Data suggests that there’s overall opposition to the idea of raising the
retirement age. According to a May 2026 Ronald Reagan Institute survey, 74% of
voters oppose raising the retirement age. However, 90% of voters opposed
cutting Social Security benefits, such as the broad cuts that might be
implemented if the trust fund were to become depleted.

AARP reports that about 40% of Social Security beneficiaries aged 65 and older
receive at least half of their income from their Social Security benefits.
Nearly 15% of beneficiaries rely on those benefits for 90% or more of their
income. That significant dependence on the program suggests that any reduction
in benefits might have a widespread effect, explaining the overall opposition to
    raising the retirement age.

Alternatives to raising the retirement age

Increasing the retirement age isn’t the only option that legislators are
exploring. Lawmakers have discussed eliminating or raising the wage cap, so more
of high-earners’ salaries are taxed to help fund the program. Lawmakers could
also raise the payroll tax rate, generating more revenue for the Social Security
    program from payroll taxes.

Another potential solution includes reducing benefits for people who earned more
money during their lifetime, so those who earned less money could receive higher
    benefits.

    Bottom line

Increasing the full retirement age is an open policy question, not a definite
plan. That said, the future of the Social Security program is uncertain, and
it’s likely that Congress may implement a combination of solutions to address
    the program’s financial challenges.

If you’re approaching retirement age, be sure that you understand how your
claiming age affects your benefits, and give some careful thought to when you
decide to claim Social Security. It’s also a good idea to stress-test your retirement
plan with a lower Social Security monthly benefit so you can create a plan,
just in case benefits should be reduced.
