Gone are the days when weekend wellness meant choosing between the gym and yoga. Across Kolkata, immersive experiences are redefining fitness, with sound taking centre stage. From dancing to live dhol beats and blindfoldedcycling to floating on water as singing bowls resonate, these sessions blur the lines between exercise, meditation and entertainment. Wellness experts say people now seek experiences over routines – less focused on calorie counts and more on disconnecting from notifications to reconnect with themselves. CT experienced one such session firsthand – and if you’re looking to refresh your weekend wellness routine too, it might just be worth trying yourself.Cardio, reimaginedIf you’ve ever found yourself instinctively tapping your feet at the sound of a dhol, imagine building an entire workout around that feeling. At Recovery Room, Dhol Wellness replaces conventional gym playlists with the energy of a live percussionist, creating a cardio session that feels closer to a celebration than a fitness class. Participants move through high-energy routines guided by the rhythm, with the beat naturally dictating pace and intensity. For founders Aastha Seth and Yashvi Kumar Tandon of The Recovery Room, the idea was to make movement feel instinctive. “Calcutta came in curious and left hooked,” they say. “People today want wellness that feels like a celebration. The dhol is nostalgic, high-energy and brings everyone together.” The founders explain that unlike traditional cardio, participants stop obsessing over repetitions or calories because the rhythm encourages them to simply keep moving. “The live music and collective energy help people let go and de-stress. Most participants tell us they’ve never had fitness feel this fun.”Equally important is the environment. Conducted in an intimate women-only setting, the sessions are designed to be free of judgement, allowing participants to be loud, energetic and uninhibited. Good acoustics, dynamic lighting and enough room to move transform the studio into a space that shifts seamlessly from workout mode to party mode. The art of sensory spinningIt may sound counter-intuitive, but taking away one sense can heighten the others. That’s the philosophy behind blindfolded spinning, where participants exercise on spin bikes wearing blindfolds, allowing music to guide the session. Without distractions, attention shifts to breathing, posture, rhythm and body awareness. Soft lighting, balm candles and immersive music create a calming atmosphere, while the absence of mirrors reduces performance anxiety. According to Avantika Agarwal and Mehal Gupta, co-founders of Sokin Wellness, the concept evolved as people sought experiences that were both restorative and physically engaging. “We started as a product-first brand but evolved into creating immersive wellness experiences,” they say. Beyond improving stamina and cardiovascular fitness, the sessions also build confidence and body awareness through music and aromatherapy.Waterborne wellnessHeld in a pool, the session lets participants lie on floating mattresses while being guided through breathwork, meditation and live sound healing using singing bowls, chimes and therapeutic frequencies. It begins with a marma activation ritual before participants settle into the water, where gentle movement, sound vibrations and aromatherapy work together to calm the nervous system. Unlike conventional meditation, the water becomes an active part of the experience, reducing physical pressure while amplifying sound vibrations. Avantika Agarwal and Mehal Gupta say Kolkata’s response has exceeded expectations. “People are increasingly looking for spaces where they can disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with themselves,” they say. Combining floating, guided meditation, therapeutic sound and aromatherapy, Aqua Sound Healing offers a multisensory reset designed to help participants leave feeling calmer, emotionally lighter and mentally clearer after every immersive wellness session.Floating on water while listening to the singing bowls felt like pressing pause on the chaos of the week.
