In a rare recognition of an individual’s contribution to mental health and suicide prevention, the Tata Group has honoured decorated Kargil war veteran and retired Group Captain G.J. Rao for his two-decade-long mission to save lives.

A former Indian Air Force officer, Mr. Rao began his work in suicide prevention through the ‘Samvedana’ helpline while serving in the armed forces. After retiring, he continued the mission by sharing his personal mobile number, making himself available round the clock for people in emotional distress.

He also authored a widely recognised book on suicide prevention, which was released by former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. The book directly inspired the launch of Telangana’s 24×7 suicide prevention helpline. On its very first day, September 3, 2015, the helpline saved a young man from attempting suicide in Hyderabad.

Mr. Rao later produced the award-winning feature film September-10, which focuses on suicide prevention and was released to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day.

In recognition of his work, the Tata Group presented him with a Tata Curvv car and produced a 105-second video showcasing his two decades of service. Mr. Rao said the honour has inspired him to expand his efforts by supporting the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Rao said the vehicle has enabled him to travel to remote villages to support families affected by suicide, helping them rebuild confidence and connecting them with assistance. He cited the example of the daughter (name withheld) of a suicide victim from Nirmal Nagar, who is now receiving full educational sponsorship from NRI donor Ram Kumar. He also said Sayamma, a widow from Narsapur, is being provided a house with support from philanthropist Srinivas of the ‘I 4 Farmers’ NGO.

He has also helped secure admissions for three underprivileged girls to Kasturba Gandhi Balika Residential School, reflecting his commitment to supporting vulnerable children through education. “There is no better social cause than saving precious lives,” Mr. Rao said, urging governments and private organisations to make suicide prevention a priority under their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Calling for a nationwide movement under the slogan “Each One, Save One”, Mr. Rao urged every citizen to identify and support people in distress. He added that he has offered to make his book and film available free of cost to the governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, as well as the rest of the country, and is willing to assist authorities in combating what he describes as a preventable social menace.
