On October 30, Reddit had the worst trading day since it went public. Its shares fell about 29% after the company warned that Google’s AI-powered search was sending it far fewer visitors. Reddit is one of the most visible sites on the internet, a place people used to find by typing “reddit” at the end of their Google searches, and it’s now telling investors it may lose a meaningful slice of its daily audience because Google answers the question before anyone clicks.

If you run an online business, that news deserves more than a passing glance. AI search traffic is becoming harder to win and harder to keep, and the businesses most exposed are the ones that built their customer pipeline on someone else’s search results. The good news is that you don’t need Reddit’s resources to respond. You need an honest look at where your customers come from and a plan to turn more of those visits into relationships you own.

What Reddit’s Warning Actually Tells You

The numbers are worth understanding because they show where the open web is heading. According to TechCrunch’s report on Reddit’s third-quarter results, search referrals dropped by more than one million a week on average during October, and the company warned that its daily active users could fall by a low double-digit percentage next quarter if the trend continues. In the US, daily users slipped to 50.7 million from 53.2 million the quarter before. CEO Steve Huffman was blunt on the earnings call, saying that AI mode “does not drive traffic, not for us and not to anybody.”

Reddit’s response is telling. It plans to test a logged-in experience, starting in select markets outside the US, so that more of its audience shows up as known users rather than anonymous visitors arriving from Google. It’s a big shift for a site that has let anyone browse freely for two decades, and it’s a direct answer to a simple question every business now has to ask: how much of our audience do we actually own?

Google is feeling it too. Its own Search revenue grew 12% last quarter, and on the earnings call the company acknowledged that strong growth in AI Mode queries weighed on revenue because those searches currently earn less from ads, as Search Engine Land reported. Google also said AI Mode queries are about three times longer than traditional searches, and it plans to bring agents into Search that can book reservations, fill out forms and make purchases. More of the journey is staying inside Google.

Independent research points the same way. A Pew Research Center analysis of real browsing data found that people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result link in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. They clicked a link inside the summary itself in just 1% of visits. Searches phrased as questions were the most likely to trigger a summary, which is exactly the kind of search a lot of helpful business content was written to capture.

Kevin Indig’s conversation on the Ahrefs Podcast is one of the clearest explanations of what this shift means for anyone who depends on search, and how to adapt.

Find Out How Exposed You Really Are

Before you change anything, measure your dependence. Open your analytics and work out what share of your leads, sales and email sign-ups started with an organic search visit over the last twelve months. Many founders guess at this number and guess low. If search is responsible for most of the people who end up paying you, you’re carrying the same risk Reddit just disclosed, only without a balance sheet to absorb it.

Then go into Google Search Console and look at your most valuable pages over time. The pattern to watch for is impressions holding steady or rising while clicks fall. That usually means you’re still showing up, but an AI answer above you is satisfying the searcher first. Sort those pages by what they’re worth to the business, not by traffic. A how-to post that brings in casual readers matters far less than a page that consistently turns visitors into calls or customers.

Pay special attention to informational pages that answer a clear question in a few sentences. Those are the most likely to be summarized away. Pages built around a specific product, a local service, a comparison only you can make, or a tool someone needs to use are generally harder for an AI summary to replace, because the searcher still has to come to you to finish the job.

Turn Every Visit Into a Relationship You Own

The most important change you can make is to stop treating a visit as the goal. A visit is rented attention. An email address, a customer account, a community membership or a phone number for a booked call is a relationship, and no algorithm update can take it from you.

That means every page that still earns meaningful traffic should offer a clear, specific next step. A generic newsletter box rarely does the job. A checklist that matches the problem the reader came to solve, a short email course, a calculator that sends results by email, or a template they’ll actually use gives people a real reason to hand over their details. If your traffic is shrinking, the conversion rate on the traffic you keep becomes one of the most important numbers in the business.

Once someone joins, the work is to keep showing up with something worth opening. It’s worth revisiting how you build a successful email campaign so your list becomes a channel people value rather than a place where promotions go to be ignored. A smaller list that reads and replies is worth more than a large one you only email when you need a sale.

Give People a Reason to Log In

Reddit’s move toward a logged-in experience is a large-company version of something smaller businesses can do on their own terms. Huffman said logged-in users make up more than 80% of the company’s monetization, because a known user gives you signals, preferences and a way to reach them again.

For a founder, that might be a free member area with your best resources, a customer portal that makes repeat orders easier, a private community for clients, or a tool that saves people’s work when they create an account. You don’t need to wall off your content to do it, and for most small businesses that would be a mistake. The aim is to make the logged-in version genuinely more useful than the anonymous one, so people choose to come back directly rather than through a search box.

Publish Work an AI Summary Can’t Replace

Content still matters, but the bar has moved. A page that restates what’s already widely known is exactly the kind of thing an AI answer can summarize in a paragraph. What’s much harder to replace is work grounded in your own experience, such as original data from your customers, honest results from tests you ran, detailed teardowns, strong opinions backed by evidence, and practical tools.

This kind of content does two jobs at once. It gives people a reason to click through even when a summary appears, because the summary can only hint at what’s on the page. And it makes your business the kind of source AI tools are more likely to cite, which keeps your name in front of people even on searches where they never visit. Treat being mentioned as brand exposure, but don’t mistake it for a customer relationship. Your job is still to give anyone who does arrive a reason to stay connected.

Spread Your Distribution Beyond One Gatekeeper

The deeper lesson from Reddit is about concentration risk. When one platform controls how most people find you, every change that platform makes becomes a change to your revenue. The answer isn’t to chase every channel at once. It’s to build two or three dependable ways for the right people to discover you, so no single change can cut you off.

For some founders that’s YouTube or a podcast, where people choose to spend real time with you. For others it’s partnerships with businesses that already serve your customers, referrals from happy clients, speaking, or a well-run presence on the one social platform where your buyers actually spend time. As AI makes content cheaper to produce, the things that are hard to copy become more valuable, and relationships and distribution are near the top of that list. Each channel you add should eventually feed people back into the same place: your list, your community or your customer base.

Measure the Numbers That Matter Now

If you keep judging your marketing by organic sessions alone, you’ll spend the next year feeling like you’re losing even when the business is getting stronger. Traffic is likely to keep falling for a lot of informational content, and that’s not the same as losing customers.

Track the numbers that reflect ownership and intent. Watch how many new subscribers, accounts or members you add each month, how many people come to you directly or by searching your brand name, and how much revenue each visitor produces. Keep an eye on referrals from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity as their own segment, because those visitors often arrive further along in their decision. If those numbers are climbing while raw search traffic slides, you’re adapting well.

Own the Audience Before the Next Shift

Reddit can test a logged-in model because around 130 million people already visit it every day. Most businesses don’t have that cushion, which is exactly why the work needs to start now, while search is still sending meaningful traffic your way. Every visitor you convert into a subscriber, member or customer today is someone you can still reach no matter how Google’s results look next year.

AI search traffic isn’t disappearing overnight, and it will keep sending valuable visitors to businesses that publish genuinely useful work. But the era of building a business on free clicks alone is closing. The founders who come out ahead will treat search as one source of new people, then do the patient work of turning those people into an audience they own.
