In the U.S., certain Social Security beneficiaries are due to receive September’s monthly payment late next week.
On Thursday, September 3, Social Security benefits are to be paid out to two groups of recipients, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) kicks off next month’s distribution timeline for the program.
Who gets Social Security benefits on September 3?

September’s Social Security is to be issued to beneficiaries who began receiving their payments before May 1997.
- Dual beneficiaries: Social Security + SSI
Thursday 3 is also September’s Social Security payment date for beneficiaries who combine the scheme with Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
A benefit for certain low-income, low-resource Americans, SSI differs from Social Security as it is needs-based. A claimant’s eligibility for the program does not depend on their employment record.
Worth a monthly average of $736.54, according to the SSA’s latest figures, SSI benefits are to be distributed for next month on Tuesday, September 1.

What other Social Security payment dates are in September?
Of the U.S.’s total of 71.3 million Social Security beneficiaries, most will get their September payment on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in the month, depending on their date of birth:
- Born on 1st-10th of any month: paid on Wednesday, September 9
- Born on 11th-20th of any month: paid on Wednesday, September 16
- Born on 21st-31st of any month: paid on Wednesday, September 23
NB: If you receive Social Security based on someone else’s work history, the SSA refers to the other person’s date of birth.
How does the Social Security Administration pay benefits?
Social Security beneficiaries can supply the SSA with their bank-account information by logging in to the agency’s online “my Social Security” portal.
Monthly money can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for federal disbursements. Sign up for Direct Express at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
