Social Security beneficiaries could receive a noticeably larger cost of living adjustment in 2027, but claims that everyone is guaranteed an extra $200 per month are misleading.

The Senior Citizens League currently forecasts a 3.8% COLA for 2027, up from the 2.8% adjustment applied in 2026. The estimate remains preliminary because the final increase won’t be known until inflation data for July, August and September is available.

The official COLA is calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W, during the third quarter. Social Security will announce the final percentage in October.

Would a 3.8% COLA mean an extra $200?

    Not for the typical beneficiary.

The average Social Security payment across all beneficiaries was about $1,938 per month in June 2026, according to figures cited by The Senior Citizens League. A 3.8% increase on that amount would add roughly $74 per month, before any deductions.

Someone receiving $2,500 monthly would see an increase of about $95 under a 3.8% COLA.

A beneficiary would need to already receive roughly $5,263 per month for a 3.8% increase alone to add around $200.

Where does the $200 figure come from?

The $200 figure comes from separate legislation discussed in Congress rather than the standard COLA calculation.

One proposal would provide an emergency $200-per-month increase in Social Security benefits, but the version highlighted by lawmakers applied only from January through July 2026. It isn’t an automatic part of the 2027 COLA.

Lawmakers have also debated broader changes to Social Security, including using an inflation index designed to better reflect seniors’ expenses.

None of those proposals currently guarantees a $200 monthly raise in 2027.

The more realistic expectation today is a percentage increase. If the current 3.8% forecast holds, most recipients would receive a raise of dozens of dollars per month rather than a flat $200.
