The maximum Social Security tax an employee can contribute in 2026 is $11,439, although only workers earning at least $184,500 will reach that limit.

The Social Security taxable wage base increased from $176,100 in 2025 to $184,500 in 2026. Earnings up to that threshold are subject to the 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax, while wages above it aren’t.

An employer must contribute an equal amount on behalf of the worker. That means an employee earning at least $184,500 can have a maximum of $11,439 withheld, with the employer paying another $11,439.

Together, the maximum employee and employer contributions total $22,878 for the year.

How is the maximum Social Security contribution calculated?

The calculation uses the 2026 taxable wage limit and the employee tax rate: $184,500 multiplied by 6.2 percent equals $11,439.

Someone earning less than $184,500 will pay 6.2 percent of their full covered wages. An employee earning $100,000, for example, would contribute $6,200 during the year, assuming all that income is subject to Social Security tax.

Workers earning more than $184,500 stop paying the Social Security portion of FICA once their year-to-date covered wages reach the limit. Payroll withholding should then stop for the remainder of the calendar year.

The wage base rose by $8,400 compared with 2025. As a result, the maximum employee contribution increased by $520.80, from $10,918.20 in 2025 to $11,439 in 2026.

What’s the maximum for self-employed workers?

Self-employed people generally pay both the employee and employer portions of Social Security tax through self-employment tax.

The combined Social Security rate is 12.4 percent, producing a maximum 2026 Social Security contribution of $22,878 on the first $184,500 of eligible net self-employment earnings.

Self-employed taxpayers may generally deduct the employer-equivalent portion of their self-employment tax when calculating adjusted gross income. That deduction reduces taxable income, but it doesn’t reduce the amount of Social Security tax owed.

The Social Security wage cap doesn’t apply to Medicare tax. Employees continue paying the standard 1.45 percent Medicare tax after reaching $184,500, while employers continue matching it. Some higher earners may also owe the Additional Medicare Tax.

Workers with more than one employer should pay particular attention to their withholding. Each employer may withhold Social Security tax without accounting for wages paid by another company, potentially causing the worker’s total withholding to exceed $11,439. Any excess can generally be claimed as a credit on the worker’s federal income tax return.

The central figure for 2026 is therefore $11,439 for employees, matched by another $11,439 from employers. Self-employed workers may pay the combined maximum of $22,878.
