    Quick Read

    • A record 401(k) driven by AI stocks exposes new retirees to sequence-of-returns risk, where early market losses can permanently derail a retirement plan.

    • A $3,000 monthly Social Security check delivers $36,000 in inflation-adjusted income yearly, cutting portfolio withdrawals and shrinking exposure to a market downturn.

    • Holding one to three years of withdrawals in short-term Treasuries near 4% and rebalancing away from concentrated AI winners reduces forced selling risk in a downturn.

    • Are you ahead, or behind on retirement? SmartAsset’s free tool can match you with a financial advisor in minutes to help you answer that today. Each advisor has been carefully vetted, and must act in your best interests. Don’t waste another minute; learn more here.

Picture a 66-year-old who wrapped up his last day of work in June, logged into his 401(k) that night, and saw a number he had never seen before. The account balance was at an all-time high, up sharply over the past year on the back of the AI-driven rally. On paper, he was genuinely wealthy.

Retirement forums are full of a similar scenario: A new retiree posts a screenshot, asks whether he can safely pull $6,000 a month, and mentions that most of the growth came from a handful of technology names he never sold. The warnings are the replies worth reading.

His Social Security check, steadily deposited every month, may be the single most important line item in his plan right now, precisely because the big number on the 401(k) screen is also the most fragile.

Why the Record High Is the Warning Sign

The technical name for what he faces is sequence-of-returns risk. In plain English, if markets fall hard in the first few years of retirement while he is selling shares to live on, he locks in losses that a still-working investor could simply ride out. Early losses are the ones that can break a plan.

    What’s Your Number…?

Here’s a question most people 5y from retirement can’t answer: at your current savings rate, how much do you need, and how long will it actually last? A good advisor can put a date on that in a single meeting. SmartAsset’s free quiz matches you with up to three fiduciary advisors serving your area, so you can get YOUR retirement number now (sponsor)

The Nasdaq-100 is up roughly 21% over the past year, and the S&P 500 is up about 16%. A Wall Street Journal report published July 23, 2026, citing the McKinsey Global Institute, captured the scale of the surge. Global household wealth reached $570 trillion in 2025, up 7.3% from 2024. McKinsey warned that AI-driven equity highs raise the stakes for an economically damaging correction if the technology disappoints.

    Story Continues

The concentration is part of the same story, with equities accounting for 57% of the increase in global wealth. Volatility has already flared this year. The VIX breached 30 several times during the March correction, a sign that investors were bracing for sharper market swings, while consumer sentiment has fallen and rebounded. Nobody knows whether the next leg is up or down. That is the point.

The Social Security Floor Does the Heavy Lifting

Here is why his Social Security check matters more than he probably realizes. Suppose it pays $3,000 a month. That is $36,000 a year of income that shows up whether the Nasdaq is at a record or down 30%. It is inflation-adjusted: The 2026 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) was 2.8%, and the 2027 increase will be based on CPI-W readings from July through September. That check is the closest thing to a pension most Americans will ever have.

If he needs $84,000 a year to live on, that $36,000 floor means he only has to pull $48,000 from the portfolio. In a bad year, drawing $48,000 from a battered account is far easier to sustain than drawing the full $84,000. Social Security shrinks the portion of retirement that depends on selling shares at the wrong moment.

    How the Pieces Fit Together

Two adjustments do most of the work here.

    1. Build a cash and short-Treasury buffer. With the one-year Treasury near 4.1% and the two-year around 4.3%, holding one to three years of expected withdrawals outside equities could keep him from having to sell stocks into a downturn. Combined with Social Security, that buffer can carry him through a rough market without immediately touching the AI-heavy portion.

    2. Rebalance away from the concentrated winners. Inflation is still running warm, with core PCE up 3.4% over the past year. He still needs stocks for what could be another 25 years of retirement. He may not need so much riding on the same handful of companies. Trimming the winners and returning to his target allocation is exactly what rebalancing is designed to do.

What to Actually Do With This

The mistake that is hardest to undo is spending the first two years of retirement pulling heavily from a concentrated equity portfolio just before a correction. The mistake that is easiest to make is looking at a record balance and assuming it is permanent, when the most dependable piece of the plan is the Social Security check.

The record number on the screen is real, but it is a snapshot. Treating it as a reason to lock in some certainty, not a green light to spend freely, gives the rest of the portfolio room to do its job. A conversation with a fiduciary advisor before setting the withdrawal plan is usually worth the hour.
