A limited-edition Social Security card has been introduced to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, but most people won’t be able to request the new design.

The Social Security Administration’s commemorative card carries a black “Freedom 250” logo on the front. Apart from that addition, it functions in exactly the same way as a standard Social Security card and doesn’t provide its holder with any extra benefits or privileges.

Eligibility is restricted to children born between July 2 and December 31, 2026. The card must also be issued as an original Social Security card through the Enumeration at Birth program.

Adults can’t exchange their existing card for the commemorative version. Replacement cards, duplicate cards, and original cards issued outside the qualifying program or date range won’t feature the Freedom 250 logo.

How can parents get the new Social Security card?

Parents of an eligible newborn can request a Social Security number while registering the child’s birth at a participating hospital or birthing center. The Enumeration at Birth process may also be available when a licensed midwife handles the birth registration.

Parents should select the option to request a Social Security number as part of the birth registration paperwork. The information is then shared with the Social Security Administration, which creates the child’s record and mails the original card.

There is no separate application specifically for the commemorative design. A qualifying newborn should receive it automatically when the original card is issued through the program.

Parents who wait and apply separately later may receive a standard card instead, even when their child was born during the eligibility period.

How much does the new card cost?

The Freedom 250 Social Security card is free. The SSA doesn’t charge for an original card, a corrected card, or a replacement card.

Private websites sometimes charge people to prepare Social Security card applications, but these businesses aren’t affiliated with the federal government and don’t provide faster access. Applicants must still submit the required information and supporting documents to the SSA.

Anyone who loses or damages a regular card can request a free replacement through the SSA’s online card service, depending on their circumstances. Some applicants may need to complete the process at a local Social Security office and provide evidence of identity.

A replacement won’t carry the Freedom 250 design, even when the cardholder originally received the commemorative version.
