The Social Security Administration giveth and the Social Security Administration taketh away.
But in the end – at least in terms of annual payments – it all works out.
Recipients of Supplemental Security Income, benefits for low-income seniors and people with disabilities or blindness, got a payment on July 1. They will receive another payment on July 31 but none in August.
Some 7 million SSI recipients typically get payments on the first of the month unless that falls on a holiday or weekend. Since Aug. 1 is a Saturday, the payment is pushed back to the closest Friday on July 31. That means SSI recipients will get two payments in July and none in August.
The schedule will return to normal in September when the first of the month falls on a Tuesday.
There are other schedule changes in the year: Nov. 1 is a Sunday, so the payment will be issued Oct. 30. SSI payments will also be made on Dec. 1 and then again on Dec. 31 since Jan. 1, 2027 is a federal holiday.
When will my next Social Security check arrive?
The schedule for traditional Social Security payments is more standard.
People born between the 1st and the 10th are paid on the second Wednesday of the month. People with birthdays between the 11th and the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday and those with birthdays from the 21st to the 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday.
People who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 or who receive both Social Security and SSI. In those cases, Social Security is paid on the third of the month and SSI on the first.
