Estimating a future Social Security payment can help workers decide when to retire, but no online calculator can guarantee the exact amount they’ll eventually receive.

AARP and NerdWallet both provide tools that estimate monthly retirement benefits using information such as age and earnings. However, the AARP calculator is the stronger overall option for people comparing different claiming strategies, while NerdWallet offers a faster and simpler estimate.

The final payment depends on a worker’s earnings history and the age at which benefits begin. Social Security generally considers a person’s 35 highest earning years, adjusted for wage growth.

What does the NerdWallet calculator show?

NerdWallet asks users to enter their date of birth, desired claiming age, current annual income, and expected annual salary increase.

It then estimates the monthly retirement benefit and identifies the user’s full retirement age. The calculator incorporates Social Security information including wage indexing, the annual taxable wage base, cost of living adjustments, and the reductions or increases associated with claiming at different ages.

Its main advantage is simplicity. Someone can quickly compare what could happen if benefits begin at 62, full retirement age, or as late as 70.

However, NerdWallet warns that the result may be higher or lower than the actual payment because the calculator doesn’t use the individual’s complete earnings record. It estimates past earnings from current income and assumes the person continues working until benefits begin.

Which Social Security estimator is best?

AARP’s calculator is the better planning tool because it displays estimated monthly benefits at different claiming ages and can show how delaying retirement could increase the payment.

It asks for a date of birth, current salary, and marital status. Married users can also enter a spouse’s age and salary, allowing the tool to compare estimated household benefits.

AARP says its estimate is primarily based on age and average earnings. It can also show how much of a person’s daily expenses Social Security may cover and how continuing to work after claiming could affect income.

The calculator doesn’t estimate disability, Supplemental Security Income, survivor, or divorced spouse payments. AARP also warns that its results are educational estimates rather than guaranteed figures.

NerdWallet is best for a quick calculation with minimal information. AARP is the stronger option for examining several claiming ages and considering retirement income within a broader household plan.

Using both can provide a useful comparison, but neither result should be treated as an official Social Security payment amount.
