Millions of Social Security recipients could receive a larger monthly benefit in 2027 if the latest cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) projection holds steady through the remainder of the year.

According to the newest estimate from The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), beneficiaries are currently on track for a 3.8% COLA in 2027. While that figure remains only a projection, it would represent a noticeable increase over recent annual adjustments and provide additional relief for retirees coping with higher everyday expenses.

Social Security: When is COLA announced, how is it determined and how much can people expect?M.C.

The annual COLA is designed to help Social Security benefits keep pace with inflation. Each year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) calculates the adjustment using data from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), comparing inflation during the third quarter of the current year with the same period a year earlier.

Because inflation data for July, August and September has not yet been finalized, the official 2027 COLA will not be announced until October. Until then, economists and advocacy organizations continue updating their projections as new inflation reports are released.

The latest forecast from TSCL held steady at 3.8%, reflecting continued price pressures across several sectors of the economy despite inflation cooling from the historic highs seen earlier this decade.

For retirees, the biggest question is simple: How much more money would a 3.8% COLA actually provide each month?

Someone currently receiving a monthly Social Security benefit of $1,500 would see an increase of approximately $57 per month, bringing their benefit to about $1,557.

A beneficiary collecting $2,000 per month would receive roughly $76 more each month, increasing the payment to $2,076.

Meanwhile, someone receiving $2,500 monthly would gain approximately $95, while beneficiaries with a $3,000 monthly benefit would see an increase of about $114 per month if the projection ultimately becomes official.

Although these increases can help offset rising living costs, many advocacy groups argue that COLAs often fail to fully reflect the spending patterns of older Americans, who typically devote a larger share of their budgets to healthcare, housing and prescription medications.

Why the official COLA could still change

While the 3.8% estimate has drawn attention, experts continue to emphasize that it remains far from final.

The Social Security Administration bases each year’s COLA on the average CPI-W readings from July through September. Since two months of key inflation data are still outstanding, the projected increase could move either higher or lower before the official announcement.

Economists note that energy prices, shelter costs and healthcare inflation could all influence the final calculation over the coming months. Any unexpected shifts in those categories would affect the overall inflation reading used to determine next year’s adjustment.

The annual COLA has varied significantly in recent years as inflation has fluctuated. Following record-high increases during the post-pandemic inflation surge, adjustments have gradually moderated as price growth slowed. Even so, inflation has remained above the Federal Reserve’s long-term target, contributing to expectations that beneficiaries will receive another meaningful increase in 2027.

It’s also important to remember that a larger COLA does not necessarily translate into greater purchasing power. Rising Medicare Part B premiums, higher prescription drug costs and increasing insurance or housing expenses can reduce the real value of the annual increase for many retirees.

Financial planners generally encourage beneficiaries to view the COLA as protection against inflation rather than additional discretionary income. Since many retirees rely on Social Security as their primary source of retirement income, the adjustment plays an important role in helping maintain financial stability as prices change.

The official 2027 COLA will be announced by the Social Security Administration in October after all third-quarter inflation data becomes available. If the current 3.8% projection holds, millions of Americans could receive one of the larger annual benefit increases seen in recent years, with updated monthly payments beginning in January 2027.
