JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. (WWTI) – Jefferson County will kick off a week of suicide prevention events with its Annual Suicide Prevention Walk on September 20 at the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department. Registration starts at 11 a.m. The previous year’s walk raised $5,900 for local initiatives, and this year, the coalition aims to further expand its efforts. The event unites families and community members to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and support those affected by suicide, while also funding prevention training and education across the county.

“We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support this event has had over the years,” said Beth Solar, Co-Chair of the Jefferson County Suicide Prevention Coalition. According to Solar, community support demonstrates the importance of this annual event and the need for prevention and awareness resources in Jefferson County. The funds raised from the walk will help the coalition expand key prevention resources such as mental health training, community engagement and education, gun safety kits, and other local support.

Event proceeds are generated from community donations, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction, with local organizations promoting mental health initiatives and suicide prevention. The coalition’s awareness campaign includes “Chalk the Walk” from September 20 to 26, encouraging inspiring sidewalk messages. It culminates with the Color Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention on September 26 at Thompson Park in Watertown, featuring vibrant color stations. Sponsorship and vendor opportunities will be available, with further details forthcoming in mid-July.

The Jefferson County Suicide Prevention Coalition comprises health agencies, community organizations and individuals dedicated to preventing suicide deaths. The coalition offers training, coordinates resources and fosters community partnerships to fulfill its mission.
