Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after a person experiences or witnesses a traumatic event. While it is often associated with military service, PTSD can also affect people who have experienced accidents, natural disasters, violence, serious illness, abuse, or other distressing events. Increasing awareness about the condition can help reduce misconceptions and encourage timely support.

PTSD symptoms vary from person to person and may include recurring memories of the traumatic event, nightmares, anxiety, emotional numbness, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, and avoiding reminders of the experience. These symptoms can affect daily life, relationships, education, and work if left unaddressed.

Education plays an important role in helping individuals, families, schools, and workplaces recognise the signs of PTSD and respond with empathy rather than stigma. Understanding that PTSD is a recognised mental health condition—not a sign of personal weakness—can encourage those affected to seek professional help when needed.

Creating supportive environments where people feel safe discussing their mental health can make a meaningful difference. Schools and educational institutions can also promote mental health literacy by encouraging open conversations, emotional well-being programmes, and access to counselling services.
