For generations, men have been raised to “stay strong”, remain resilient and handle every challenge independently. While these are great qualities, they also contribute to a culture where stress, anxiety and emotional struggle often go unspoken. Today, as the conversation around mental health continues to evolve, experts are encouraging men to view mental wellness as an essential part of everyday wellbeing rather than reaction to a crisis.

This Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, Shruti Bajpai, MA Clinical Psychologist, shares six practical and impactful wellness tips that can help in reducing stress, build emotional resilience, and create healthier coping habits. While major life changes are essential to mental wellbeing, it often begins with small shifts in everyday conversations, behaviours, and self-awareness

You Don’t Have to Be Strong All the Time

Men often carry the pressure of being the protecter, provider and problem-solver in every situation. Over the time, constantly suppressing emotions can lead to emotional exhaustion and can lead to chronic stress. Yet many men hesitate to discuss Regular emotional check-ins with trusted friends, family members, or mentors can provide relief and perspective. Sometimes, being heard is just as important as finding a solution. In fact, ekincare’s From Silence to Signal: India Inc’s Mental Wellness Reckoning (2023–2026) report found that while men are more clinically represented in anxiety and depression than women (38% vs 32%), they often express distress less directly highlighting the importance of creating spaces where conversations about mental wellbeing can happen openly.

Set Boundaries to Protect Your Wellbeing

Many men find themselves constantly available to work, family, and responsibilities. While commitment is important, always saying yes can lead to burnout. Setting healthy boundaries, whether by protecting personal time, taking breaks, or declining additional commitments, helps preserve mental and emotional energy. Protecting your wellbeing is not being selfish; it is essential for long-term resilience.

Make Time for Meditation and Yoga

Anxiety keeps the mind in a constant cycle of activity, making it difficult to relax and restart. Practices such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing can help in calming the nervous system. It helps in improving focus and providing a greater sense of emotional balance. Even by dedicating 10-15 minutes a day to mindfulness can help reduce anxiety & stress, improving overall mental wellbeing.

    Stay Physically Active

Physical activity is one of the most impactful way to manage stress. Regular exercise and movement results in releasing endorphins, improving mood, boosts energy levels and support better sleep. Whether it is cycling, a walk, a gym workout or any sport you enjoy, consistent movement can have a significant impact on both physical and mental wellbeing.

    Normalize Seeking Professional Support

The way people seek medical advice for physical health concerns, seeking therapy or counselling should also be viewed as a proactive step toward better mental health.

Professional support can help in manage stress, navigate emotional challenges. While many men continue to remain hesitant about seeking support even when workplace mental health resources are available, younger generations are beginning to challenge this stigma.

Maintain Healthy Eating Habits and Routines

What we eat and when we eat can significantly impact our mood, energy, and ability to cope with stress. Irregular meals, excessive caffeine, and poor nutrition can contribute to fatigue and irritability.

Maintaining a consistent eating routine and choosing balanced, nutritious meals helps support both physical health and emotional wellbeing, making it easier to manage daily stressors.

    The Conversation That Matters Most

Managing stress is not about eliminating every challenge from life. It is about building healthier ways to respond to those challenges.

By embracing vulnerability, setting boundaries, communicating openly, practicing self-compassion, and strengthening support systems, men can develop greater emotional resilience and wellbeing.

This Men’s Mental Health Month, perhaps the most important reminder is that seeking support, expressing emotions, and prioritizing mental wellbeing are not signs of weakness, they are essential steps toward living a healthier, happier, and more balanced life.
