Some Social Security recipients will see two payments arrive in July 2026, but the extra deposit does not mean the government is sending a bonus.
The double-payment month affects people who receive Supplemental Security Income, better known as SSI. The first SSI payment is scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, while the second is expected on Friday, July 31.

That second payment is actually the August SSI benefit arriving early because August 1 falls on a Saturday. When the first day of a month lands on a weekend or federal holiday, the Social Security Administration sends SSI payments on the previous business day.
That means eligible recipients will receive two SSI payments in July, but they shouldn’t expect another SSI payment in August.
Who gets two payments in July?
The July 1 and July 31 payments apply to SSI beneficiaries, including eligible older adults, people with disabilities, and people with limited income and resources who qualify for the federal program.
Some people receive both SSI and regular Social Security benefits, but the two-payment quirk is tied to SSI scheduling rather than standard retirement, survivor, or disability benefits.
Regular Social Security checks follow a different schedule for most recipients.
People who began receiving Social Security before May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI, usually get Social Security on the third of the month. Others are paid based on their birthday.
For July 2026, Social Security retirement, survivor, and disability payments are scheduled for July 8, July 15, and July 22, depending on whether the beneficiary’s birth date falls early, middle, or late in the month.
Why it matters for budgeting
The July 31 payment may feel like an extra check, but it is really August’s money arriving early.
That timing can create confusion, especially for recipients who rely on SSI to cover rent, food, utilities, and medical costs. Spending the second July payment too quickly could leave a gap in August.
The same calendar quirk happens several times in some years, depending on how weekends and holidays fall.
For July 2026, the important point is simple. SSI recipients may see two deposits in one month, but they are still receiving their normal monthly benefits. The schedule has moved the August payment forward, not added a new one.
