May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

The Indiana Youth Institute wants you to consider ways you can support children before a crisis.

Research shows that young people have better mental health when they feel connected to supportive adults, their schools, and environments where they feel emotionally and physically safe.

The organization’s president and CEO says positive mental health starts with connection.

“It’s really about making sure a young person feels valued and seen, instead of invisible, because when they feel invisible is when some of those struggles can really take hold and amplify,” said Dr. Tami Silverman, president and CEO of the Indiana Youth Institute.

Silverman adds that young people do not need perfect adults, they need present adults.
