May will follow a normal Social Security payment schedule, so Michigan beneficiaries may expect their checks on Wednesdays with the first payment on May 13.

Checks are always scheduled on Wednesdays, landing on May 13, 20 and 27, according to the Social Security Administration. The schedule is based on the birth dates of the recipients — retired, disabled workers or survivors.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments — a program for those with limited or no income or resources — will roll out on the first business day of the month, per usual, which lands on Friday, May 1.

Here’s more on Social Security in May 2026.

When will I get my Social Security payments in May 2026?

Social Security benefits are sent out based on the recipients’ birth dates. Here is the SSA’s schedule for May:

    • Wednesday, May 13: Birth dates between the first and 10th of May.

    • Wednesday, May 20: Birth dates between the 11th and 20th of May.

    • Wednesday, May 27: Birth dates between the 21st and 31st of May.

What should I do if I don’t get my Social Security payment?

According to the SSA, if you don’t receive your payment on the scheduled date, wait three days additional days, then call their office.

Where are the Social Security offices in Michigan?

There are 48 offices in Michigan, and to find an office near you, recipients may use the office locator via the Social Security’s website by entering your zip code for office hours, numbers, available services and more.

What is the Social Security forecast for 2027?

The 2027 Cost of Living Adjustment increase (COLA) currently is forecast to be 2.8% due to continuing inflation prices, according to The The Senior Citizens League’s April 10 monthly forecast — a nongovernmental advocacy group for seniors. If the SSA approves that rate of increase, average payment for retired workers would go up by $56 per month in January 2027.

The Motley Fool, a financial and investing advice company and USA TODAY content partner, said the COLA could be as high as 3.2% in a April 28 report.

“Independent Social Security and Medicare policy analyst Mary Johnson (of the SCL) has forecast 3.2% — an increase from her earlier prediction of 1.7%. The bottom line, though, is that we just don’t know for sure yet what the increase will be,” The Motley Fool said.

The official COLA increase for 2027 will be announced in October 2026.

What were the big Social Security changes in 2026?

There was a 2.8% COLA to Social Security and SSI payments, according to Social Security’s COLA Fact Sheet and American Association of Retired Persons.

Here are more details on the COLA increase FOR 2026, per the SSA:

    • The maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax will increase to $184,500.

    • The earnings limit for workers who are younger than full retirement age (67 years old) will increase to $24,480. (There will be a $1 deduction for each $2 earned over $24,480.)

    • The earnings limit for people reaching their full retirement age in 2026 will increase to $65,160. (There will be a $1 deduction for each $3 earned over $65,160, until the month the worker turns full retirement age.)

    • There is no limit on earnings for workers who are at full retirement age or older for the entire year.
