What does it take to be a cherished employer in 2026? The Fortune 100 Best Workplaces list takes a yearly look at companies that aren’t just financially successful, but have successfully created a workplace where employees can build careers and grow with the organization. Featuring on a list doesn’t always make operations perfect by default, but they do allow employees to get a better sense of the workplace and what to expect from its culture and community.
In an era defined by chronic job anxiety over layoffs and AI displacement, organizations that take employee well-being seriously are true examples of successful businesses to model your own after. This year, Synchrony tops the 2026 list of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For, but it isn’t the only company that we should be talking about this year.

Fortune Lists the 100 Best Workplaces for 2026: What Does It Mean to Be an Ideal Place of Work?
The 2026 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For List, released in partnership with Great Place To Work, is an annual acknowledgement of workplaces that stood out in 2025. “The 100 Best group shows broader representation across industries such as financials, consumer discretionary, industrials, health care, and telecommunications, underscoring that the long-term results come from a diversified set of companies rather than concentration in mega-cap names,” said Catherine Yoshimoto, director, product management at FTSE Russell.
Today, the top employers list primarily serves as another metric for investors to take into account while planning where to redirect their wealth. As Great Place To Work notes, “its model has a long track record of measuring the value employees bring to the workplace. Companies on the list have seen an annualized stock return of 13.4% over the past 28 years, compared to 9.2% for the Russell 3000 Index.”
This doesn’t offer employees the best insight into the reason for working for an employer that ranks well on this list, but it does offer some perspective on what drives the companies that feature on it. As a result, the list ultimately functions more as a tool for other employers to determine how best to drive their own operations, but there are some takeaways for employees as well. As the list relies on anonymous feedback from employees to determine its final lineup of winners, it is a reflection of the employee sentiments at the organization to a degree.
Why Should You Care About the Best Companies to Work for in 2026?
Reportedly, companies that feature on this list report considerably higher levels of psychological and emotional health (81%) in the workplace when compared to a typical U.S. workplace (56%). High psychological safety can be tied to 44% greater confidence in leaders and a doubling of the retention numbers.
As we’ve seen before, trust in leadership often drives change within the organization, and things are no different when it comes to AI adoption. Research from Great Place To Work found that employees are 2.5 times more likely to adopt AI when their leaders are open to discussing it, and 2.1 times more likely to see reason when employers explain how the technology can benefit their careers.
We are living through a period where employee trust in leadership and their intentions has faded to suspicions and anger instead, and this isn’t ideal for a workplace to thrive. While the ranking for the top workplaces in 2026 isn’t the only way to determine how to get leadership and culture right, it certainly is a good start.

The Best Workplaces Build Trust with Their Employees and Lead the AI Shift with Patience
The companies that work together with their employees rather than against them can reap the benefits of collaboration to a higher degree. Whether you look at this list or the Glassdoor list of the best places to work, it is clear that some defining factors make a good employer into an inspirational one.
As Fortune puts it, employers that listen to their peers and colleagues, invest in AI-ready careers, and double down on analog perks that allow employees to reconnect with the things that matter most to them are most likely to succeed. Employers that don’t just hire leaders but develop them into true representatives of the organizational values stand a better change on inspiring employees, which means that there is considerable work to be done in rebuilding business practices in 2026.
