IPOH: Deep and persistent loneliness, particularly among the elderly community, has led many to turn to an emotional support group, simply in search of a human connection.

Pertubuhan Befrienders Ipoh Perak chairman SS Jeyamaran said the voluntary hotline, which provides free and confidential mental health support, receives calls daily from people struggling with isolation, distress and even suicidal thoughts.

He said many of the loneliness-related calls come from older adults living alone, often in what is widely regarded as a quiet retirement city.

“Some callers share that their children have moved away for work, while others feel unheard by family members or have outlived their social circles.

“Some just want someone to listen, and while such cases may not always involve immediate risk, prolonged loneliness can lead to depression and potentially suicidal tendencies,” he said.

“Volunteers are trained to help callers explore their feelings and situations, offering emotional support rather than solutions,” he added.

He said the organisation currently has about 30 volunteers, and plans to recruit around 20 more to meet increasing demand.

A five-session mental health awareness training programme will be held on April 18, 19, 23, 25 and 26 for the public.

“Participants can gain basic knowledge on mental health and suicide awareness. For those interested in volunteering, this is a great platform to start with.

“The public will also be taught to recognise subtle warning signs of suicidal behaviour, which is often present but easily overlooked,” he said.

The organisation’s assistant secretary Chow Li Kuen said the hotline operates daily from 1pm to 10pm.

“While older people tend to call the hotline, young adults and teenagers prefer using e-mail to express concerns such as academic pressure, fear of disappointing their parents and anxiety over exam results,” she added.

Those who wish to join the training programme can register via https://forms.gle/dN8Xm7AWmQoC3kgaA by April 15.
