SEDIBENG – Screams of cheer, different colours in the sky, and a vibey energy, these are some of the festivities carried out at Emmanuel Primary School in Sharpeville during Mental Health Awareness on March 6.

The initiative aimed to create a safe space for learners to understand the importance of mental health and encourage them to speak openly about emotional challenges without fear of stigma.

Speaking to Ster, Learner Support Agent at the school Temoso Xhane said the idea for the awareness programme came from her daily interaction with learners.

“In my role working closely with learners, I have observed that many young people silently carry emotional and psychological burdens. This reality motivated me to initiate an awareness programme that would educate learners about mental health, encourage dialogue, and remind them that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a step towards healing and strength,” said Xhane.

The colour run saw learners participating in a lively activity filled with bright powder and excitement.

According to Xhane, the colour run was chosen deliberately to symbolise diversity, hope, and the many emotions people experience in life.

“The vibrant colours represented the message that, just like life itself, mental health is not one-dimensional. The activity created an uplifting and energetic atmosphere where learners could participate together, reinforcing unity, joy, and support within the school community,” she explained.

She added that the programme sought to break the silence around mental health and build a culture of empathy and peer support among learners.

Xhane also expressed gratitude to the school leadership for supporting the initiative.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our Principal, Gloria Lebeoana, and Deputy Principal, Khanye MG, whose unwavering support and openness to innovative ideas made it possible for this initiative to come to life. Their commitment to the well-being of learners continues to create an environment where impactful programmes can thrive,” she said.

She further acknowledged the contributions of Moeketsi Reuben Mokele, Mojalefa Mafuma, John Tatai, and Sanana Qhamakoane, as well as Mam Zungu, Mr Mafabatho, and Mam Boitumelo Mookele for their support in making the day a success.
