The Social Security Administration (SSA), which has so far paid out March’s money to four out of six groups of benefits recipients, is currently in the midst of this month’s three-Wednesdays payment cycle.

Three-Wednesdays payment cycle – status update:
Of the 70.8 million Americans who receive one of the SSA’s Social Security benefits – retirement, disability (SSDI) or survivor pay – most get their money on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month.
A recipient’s designated Wednesday is determined by the date of birth of the worker whose Social Security taxes have accumulated the benefits entitlement.
In March, this payment cycle kicked off last week, with two more distribution dates still to come this month:
- Born on 1st-10th of any month: Wednesday, Mar. 11
- Born on 11th-20th of any month: Wednesday, Mar. 18
- Born on 21st-31st of any month: Wednesday, Mar. 25
What about other SSA recipients?
Per the SSA’s official payment calendar, the following beneficiaries are paid outside of the three-Wednesdays schedule – and should, in each case, have already received their March money:
- Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries
On Friday, Feb. 27, the SSA was to issue this month’s benefits to recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – a separate scheme that exists outside of the agency’s Social Security entitlement program.
SSI is typically issued on the first day of each month, but as Mar. 1 fell on a weekend day, payment was brought forward to the nearest business day before then.
A program with 7.4 million recipients across the U.S., SSI is aimed at low-income individuals who are over 65 or have a disability. It differs from Social Security benefits as it is a purely needs-based program: it does not depend on a recipient’s prior Social Security-tax contributions.
- Certain long-term Social Security beneficiaries
On Tuesday, Mar. 3, the SSA was due to send out retirement, SSDI and survivor pay to any recipients who signed up for one of these benefits before May 1997.
- Twin beneficiaries: Social Security + SSI
It is possible to combine SSI with one of the SSA’s retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits; indeed, just over 2.5 million Americans claim both. This group of dual beneficiaries was to receive March’s SSI on Feb. 27, before being paid Social Security on Mar. 3.

- Tuesday, Mar. 3: Pre-May ’97/dual recipients
- Wednesday, Mar. 11: If born on 1st-10th

According to the latest figures shared by the SSA, the average monthly amounts for Social Security and SSI are:
- Retired workers: $2,076.41
- Disabled workers (SSDI): $1,633.76
- Survivors: $1,623.28
- SSI recipients: $735.91
How does the Social Security Administration send out benefits?
The SSA provides beneficiaries with two ways of receiving their monthly payments electronically:
- Recipients can have their benefits paid into their bank account by direct deposit
- Alternatively, benefits can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for federal payments made to people who do not have a bank account
