Having so far sent out March 2026’s benefits to three groups of recipients, the U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA) is now preparing to embark on this month’s three-Wednesdays payment cycle.

Here’s what you need to know about the SSA’s benefits-distribution timeline for March:

Who has already been paid for March 2026?

    • Some long-term Social Security beneficiaries

On Tuesday, March 3, Social Security was due to send out retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and survivor pay to any Americans who signed up to one of these three programs before May 1997.

On Friday, February 27, recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) were scheduled to be the first SSA beneficiaries to pick up their payments for March.

SSI is normally issued on the first day of each month, but as March 1 was a Sunday, payment was brought forward to the nearest working day before then.

A scheme for low-income individuals who are over 65 or have a disability, SSI has just under 7.4 million beneficiaries. Unlike retirement, SSDI and survivor benefits, SSI is a solely needs-based program. It does not depend on recipients’ payment of Social Security taxes.

    • Dual beneficiaries: Social Security + SSI

Of the more then seven million people who claim SSI in the U.S., some 2.5 million combine this benefit with one of the SSA’s monthly retirement, SSDI or survivor payments.

This group of beneficiaries was to receive March’s SSI on February 27, before being paid this month’s Social Security benefits on March 3.

When does the three-Wednesdays cycle start?

Of the nearly 71 million Americans who claim retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits, most are still to be paid – and will receive their money on one of three days in March: the month’s second, third or fourth Wednesday.

A recipient’s designated Wednesday is determined by the date of birth of the worker whose Social Security taxes have earned the benefits entitlement:

    • Born on 1st-10th of any month: Weds., March 11
    • Born on 11th-20th of any month: Weds., March 18
    • Born on 21st-31st of any month: Weds., March 25

Social Security and SSI – every payment date for March 2026:

    Retirement, SSDI and survivor

    • Tues., March 3: Pre-May ’97/dual recipients
    • Weds., March 11: If born on 1st-10th
    • Weds., March 18: If born on 11th-20th
    • Weds., March 25: If born on 21st-31st

You can check out the SSA’s complete benefits payment calendar for 2026 here.

How much are retirement, survivor, SSDI and SSI benefits?

Per the latest figures published by the SSA, the average monthly amounts for Social Security and SSI benefits are:

    • Retired workers: $2,074.53
    • Disabled workers (SSDI): $1,633.48
    • Survivors: $1,622.32
    • SSI recipients: $737.00

How does Social Security make benefits payments?

The SSA offers its benefits recipients two ways of picking up their payments electronically:

    • Beneficiaries can have their money paid into their bank account by direct deposit
    • Benefits can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a debit card for federal payments made to people without a bank account
