Experts long have known that strong social networks and physical activity help older adults stay healthier. Until now, however, little has been known about how these two factors interact to affect the health and well-being of this group. Now, an in-depth literature review by health behavior experts with the Texas A&M University School of Public Health gives new insight into the topic – as well as suggestions for approaches to interventions to improve both factors. Their main takeaway? Treat strong social networks and physical activity as inextricably linked, with a focus on reducing feelings of loneliness and social isolation. For this contribution, the paper’s lead…
The picturesque canals of Amsterdam are a sight to behold. The historic network of waterways, first built in the 17th-century Golden Age, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts millions of tourists every year. But they have also proved to be a dangerous place to traverse when it comes to Amsterdam’s beloved stray cat population, with 19 cats drowning in the first six months of 2025. That’s when Dutch councillor Judith Krom, of the Party for the Animals, proposed a plan to install “fauna exit points” — tiny wooden staircases — along the canal walls, not just for cats, but for…

There’s a particularly illuminating paradox buried in International Workplace Group’s 2026 State of the C-Suite report: CFOs are slashing budgets by 10% while CHROs are being asked to simultaneously boost productivity, engagement, retention, and well-being. It’s the corporate equivalent of being told to throw a banquet on a grocery-store sandwich budget.Welcome to a new year, where optimism and austerity have become uncomfortable bedfellows. In the report, all CFOs surveyed reported financial impacts from economic uncertainties and nearly all (99.62%) reported impacts from policy changes. Yet 95% of CEOs are entering the year with what can only be described as aggressive optimism. They…
As small businesses, churches, and entire communities speak out against the increased presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement across the country, one coffee shop in Portland, Oregon drew a hard line on social media when it comes to protecting their immigrant neighbors. “If I.C.E. shows up at our door, our baristas know how to properly refuse both entry and service,” Heretic Coffee posted on Instagram on January 12. “If they flash a warrant, we know exactly what to look for on that piece of paper. If they circle our parking lot waiting for customers to leave, we have an exit…
In healthcare and business, performance is often measured through output and efficiency, yet long-term results depend heavily on the emotional stability of individuals and organizations. As workplaces confront rising burnout, disengagement, and stress-related health concerns, emotional well-being has emerged as a critical driver of sustained productivity rather than a secondary consideration. Emotional Health as a Performance Factor Productivity has traditionally been associated with time management, technical skill, and operational efficiency. However, mounting evidence indicates that emotional health plays a decisive role in how effectively individuals perform over time. Emotional strain impairs concentration, decision-making, and resilience, while emotional stability supports clarity,…
