They rolled down the windows and turned up some jazz music on the radio. Then the man got out of the car, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door for the woman. He took her hand and helped her out of her seat, guided her about ten feet away from the car, and they slow danced for the next half hour under the oak tree. It was a beautiful sight to…

Each year, retirees look forward to an increase in their Social Security benefits. The increase is called a cost-of-living adjustment, and it’s based on the year-over-year increase in the Consumer Price Index, as calculated in the third quarter each year. This year’s COLA is just 2.8%, which raised benefits by an average of $56 per month, according to the Social Security Administration. Slowing inflation could push next year’s adjustment even lower. If The Senior Citizens League (TSCL)’s predictions are correct, the 2027 COLA will be just 2.5%. While the actual figure won’t come out until October, preparing for a smaller…

If you’ve studied your Bible and learned the history of Jesus’s days on earth, you will of course have learned about the Pharisees. The Pharisees were a vocal and influential Jewish religious “party” that came into prominence around 150BCE and in addition to being involved in all things “religious,” they also meddled in social and political issues, often blurring the lines between each. Within their sect, there…

Written by: Rhea Srivastava, Moitrayee Das In a country where the treatment gap for almost all mental disorders is over 60% (Gururaj et al., 2016), the setting up of another NIMHANS means much more than just a new mental health institute in Northern India. This major step begins to give mental healthcare the attention that has long been overdue. Despite the longstanding need for better systems, the Union…
