Brown Hairstreak (Thecla betulae) – by Iain H Leach / Butterfly Conservation Numbers of rare butterfly eggs have skyrocketed in South Wales after landowners let their hedgerows grow wild. Volunteers for the UK nonprofit Butterfly Conservation have counted record tallies of Brown Hairstreak eggs this winter around the Welsh county of Carmarthenshire. The success, they say, is down to two partner organizations that agreed to reduce the amount they cut back on their hedgerows, which has allowed the Brown Hairstreak to thrive. “After a decade of heartache for Brown Hairstreaks in Carmarthenshire’s Tywi valley, there is at last signs of…

Visitors sniff the ‘Scent of the Afterlife’ card at the Museum August Kestner in Hannover, Germany – SWNS Scents from the past are being recreated using state of the art technology to give museum visitors a whiff of history. Bio-molecular archaeology can bring ancient odors to life and allow people to breathe in the past. Advances in the field have shown that ancient objects can retain the “molecular fingerprints” of past aromatic practices—and scientists say those molecules provide “unprecedented” insight into ancient perfumery, medicine, ritual, and daily life. In a new study, published this week in the journal Frontiers in…
This April marked one year since Chase Benoit, a man incarcerated at California’s San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, had laid eyes on Wendel, the guide dog he had once trained in prison. But when black retriever locked eyes with Benoit, it was like no time had passed between them. “He remembers me, for sure, I could tell when he came in,” Benoit told Wendel’s owner, Robert Quigley, through an American Sign Language interpreter. “I’m so happy that you love him, and that you have a bond.”James Dern is the national director of puppy programs for Canine Companions, the nonprofit that coordinates the prison…

Albay 3rd District Rep. Raymond Adrian Salceda filed the proposed “Magna Carta for Children with Disabilities and Their Families,” a comprehensive measure establishing a national framework for early intervention, subsidized therapy, family support services, and financial assistance for families raising children with disabilities.“While the Philippines has landmark laws like the Magna Carta for Persons with Disability and the Inclusive Education Act, there remains a gap in legislation that specifically addresses the unique needs of children with disabilities and the extraordinary burdens borne by their families,” Salceda said in filing House Bill 7440. “This bill recognizes that supporting the child means…
Social Security’s combined trust funds for retirement and disability benefits are projected to hit shortfalls by 2033 under current law, meaning payroll taxes would no longer be sufficient to pay full scheduled benefits. Without legislative solutions, the funds that have accumulated in the past decades will be exhausted and incoming revenue will only cover a percentage of scheduled payouts. If nothing happens, Social Security benefits will face significant cuts. Here’s how much you could lose if this comes to pass. If Congress doesn’t act, beneficiaries would need to adjust to a new reality of reduced benefits once the trust funds…
42 years ago today, astronaut Bruce McCandless II drifted away from the space shuttle Challenger as the first human to undertake an untethered space walk. He used NASA’s Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) to control his movements rather than being joined to the craft by a safety tether. A picture of McCandless floating in space some 320 feet (98 meters) from the shuttle has become one of the most popular in the NASA archive.
