From ocean views to showers, experts explain how water helps shift the brain from stress to relaxation.

Water environments may lower cortisol, improve heart health and help reduce stress naturally.

From the calming rhythm of ocean waves to the quiet stillness of a lakeside view, water has long been associated with relaxation and mental clarity. Many people instinctively gravitate toward beaches, rivers or even long showers when they need to unwind. But beyond personal experience, science increasingly suggests that being near water may have measurable benefits for stress reduction and mental well-being.

Researchers studying the brain and nervous system have found that natural water environments can help shift the body away from chronic stress and into a calmer physiological state. This idea is often described through the concept of ‘Blue Mind,’ a term used to explain the soothing neurological response humans experience when interacting with water.

According to Dr. Arpit Bansal, Consultant in Advanced Laparoscopy, Surgical Oncology and a longevity specialist, stress can be understood through two key states of the nervous system. “Can water really reduce stress? The answer is yes and neuroscience supports it,” he explains.

Understanding ‘Red Mind’ And ‘Blue Mind’

Dr Bansal describes Red Mind as the body’s sympathetic fight-or-flight response – a state necessary for handling challenges such as high-pressure work, emergencies or demanding tasks. “Red Mind is our sympathetic ‘fight-or-flight’ mode necessary for survival, surgery, deadlines and performance,” he says.

However, problems arise when people remain stuck in this state for prolonged periods. Chronic stress can gradually affect several aspects of health. “But when we live in chronic Red Mind, stress becomes inflammation, poor sleep, gut dysfunction and emotional burnout,” he explains.

Blue Mind represents the opposite physiological state. It is a calmer, parasympathetic response that the body enters when it feels safe and relaxed. “Blue Mind is a calm, parasympathetic state activated when we are near, in or even observing water,” Dr Bansal says.

Scientific studies show that natural water environments can lower cortisol levels, slow the heart rate and reduce blood pressure. They may also improve heart rate variability (HRV), a key marker of stress resilience and healthy nervous system function.

Why Water Has Such A Powerful Effect

The calming impact of water may be deeply rooted in human biology. Dr Bansal explains that water plays a central role in both the planet and the human body. He says, “Seventy percent of the planet is water. Roughly seventy percent of the human body and nearly eighty percent of the brain is water.”

He adds that humans also begin life surrounded by fluid in the womb, which may explain why the nervous system associates water with safety and regulation.

The sensory experience of water also contributes to its calming effect. The rhythmic sound of waves, the vast visual horizon of blue landscapes and the sensation of immersion can stimulate the vagus nerve, which helps regulate the body’s stress response.

Simple Ways To Experience The ‘Blue Mind’ Effect

In modern life, constant digital exposure, urban noise and packed schedules often keep people locked in Red Mind mode. “In today’s hyper-connected world, most people are stuck in chronic Red Mind – stress, digital overload and constant urgency,” Dr Bansal says.

Water, however, can interrupt this cycle by narrowing sensory input and slowing breathing patterns, helping the body reset. “You don’t need an ocean. A lake walk, a shower ritual, mindful swimming or simply sitting near flowing water can activate Blue Mind,” he explains.

The connection between water and relaxation may feel intuitive, but neuroscience increasingly supports its role in stress regulation. Simple interactions with water can help shift the nervous system into a calmer, restorative state. By intentionally creating moments of Blue Mind in daily life, individuals may find an accessible and natural way to manage stress and support overall well-being.
