Why protecting self-respect is crucial for the mental health of migrants with disabilities?

Recognising abilities and encouraging them also strengthens the self-confidence and mental wellbeing of people with disabilities.

    Psychologist Shagufta Alam

Psychologist Shagufta Alam says anxiety, depression, and loneliness can be common among people with disabilities, but respect and attentive listening are the first steps toward healing.

This conversation is part of Healthy Australia’s podcast series on mental health and well-being, available to watch on SBS South Asian Urdu YouTube.

According to Shagufta Alam, the family’s role is to provide support, not control—respecting autonomy strengthens self-respect. She says caregivers also need breaks and support; seeking timely help is a responsibility, too.

This podcast provides general information about mental and psychological health only. For individual and specific advice, please consult a qualified professional.
