Social Security Disability Insurance recipients are among the millions of Americans waiting for the next cost-of-living adjustment, with current projections pointing toward a potentially meaningful increase in monthly benefits in 2027.

The Social Security Administration has not yet announced the official 2027 COLA. That figure is expected in October, after the government has the inflation data needed to complete the statutory calculation.

For now, estimates provide an indication of how much beneficiaries could receive if current forecasts hold.

The latest projection from the Senior Citizens League puts the 2027 COLA at 3.6%, while AARP’s recent analysis has also pointed to a figure in the mid-3% range. The estimates have moved throughout 2026 as new inflation data has been released.

That matters because the COLA is applied to Social Security benefits, including SSDI payments. A beneficiary’s actual dollar increase will therefore depend on the size of their current monthly benefit.

For example, a person currently receiving $1,500 per month would see an increase of approximately $54 if the final COLA were 3.6%. That would bring the monthly payment to about $1,554, representing roughly $648 more over a full year.

Someone receiving $2,000 per month would see approximately $72 added to their monthly benefit, taking the payment to about $2,072. Over 12 months, that would amount to an additional $864.

A $2,500 monthly benefit would increase by about $90 under a 3.6% adjustment, producing a new payment of approximately $2,590.

These are projections rather than guaranteed payment amounts. The final percentage could move higher or lower before the Social Security Administration makes its official announcement.

The reason for that uncertainty is the way the government calculates the annual adjustment.

How the 2027 COLA could affect SSDI checks

Social Security’s COLA is based on inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, commonly known as CPI-W.

The calculation uses the average CPI-W readings from July, August and September and compares that third-quarter average with the corresponding period from the previous year.

That means the September inflation figure remains particularly important for the 2027 adjustment.

The process is different from simply looking at the latest annual inflation rate. Even if prices rise or fall during individual months, the final COLA depends on the specific third-quarter CPI-W figures used in the statutory formula.

For comparison, the 2026 COLA was set at 2.8%, after the SSA determined that the relevant CPI-W measure had increased by that amount. The adjustment began with benefits payable in January 2026.

A 3.6% increase would therefore be noticeably larger than the 2026 adjustment.

AARP’s earlier 2027 projection was 3.5%, while other estimates have moved between different levels as the year has progressed.

More recent reporting has put the Senior Citizens League forecast at 3.6%, illustrating how quickly the expected increase can change when new inflation information becomes available.

For SSDI beneficiaries, however, the percentage itself only tells part of the story.

Two people receiving disability benefits could receive substantially different dollar increases because their existing monthly payments may be different.

Social Security benefits are calculated using an individual’s earnings record and other eligibility factors, rather than being set at one universal amount.

That makes it useful for recipients to calculate the potential increase based on their own current payment.

    For example:

    – $1,000 benefit: about $36 extra per month at 3.6%

    – $1,500 benefit: about $54 extra per month

    – $2,000 benefit: about $72 extra per month

    – $2,500 benefit: about $90 extra per month

    – $3,000 benefit: about $108 extra per month

The final figures could differ because the official COLA may not be exactly 3.6%.

There is also another factor beneficiaries should keep in mind. A higher Social Security payment does not necessarily mean the entire increase will translate into additional disposable income.

Changes in Medicare premiums, taxes and other household expenses can affect how much of a COLA remains in a recipient’s pocket.

The SSA’s 2026 adjustment increased benefits for tens of millions of Americans, with the agency noting that nearly 71 million Social Security beneficiaries were scheduled to receive the COLA.

The 2027 increase will follow the same basic framework, but beneficiaries will have to wait for the final inflation figures before knowing exactly what their new checks will look like.

For now, 3.6% is a reasonable working projection, not an official promise. If that forecast holds, an SSDI recipient can estimate their potential increase simply by multiplying their current monthly benefit by 0.036.

The final answer should arrive in October, when the Social Security Administration announces the official 2027 COLA. Until then, beneficiaries should treat every projected dollar amount as an estimate and watch the remaining inflation reports closely.
