September starts with a Social Security payment almost immediately. Supplemental Security Income recipients are scheduled to receive their September benefit on Tuesday, September 1, followed two days later by payments for people who have been receiving benefits since before May 1997.

Most retirement, survivor and Social Security Disability Insurance beneficiaries will then be paid on one of three Wednesdays later in the month. Their exact date depends on the birthday connected to the benefit record.

The September schedule is straightforward because none of the regular payment dates needs to be moved for a weekend or federal holiday.

Social Security Payment Calendar for September 2026

    Payment date
    Who gets paid

    Tuesday, September 1
    Supplemental Security Income recipients

    Thursday, September 3
People who started receiving payments before May 1997 and certain beneficiaries who receive both Social Security and SSI

    Wednesday, September 9
Beneficiaries with birthdays from the 1st through the 10th

    Wednesday, September 16
Beneficiaries with birthdays from the 11th through the 20th

    Wednesday, September 23
Beneficiaries with birthdays from the 21st through the 31st

The dates follow the official Social Security Administration payment calendar for 2026.

September 1 Is the First SSI Payment Since July 31

SSI recipients had an unusual August calendar. The August payment arrived on Friday, July 31 because August 1 fell on a Saturday. As a result, there was no regular federal SSI payment date during August itself.

The normal schedule returns on Tuesday, September 1.

SSI is separate from retirement and SSDI payments. It is a needs-based program for qualifying people with limited income and resources who are older, blind or disabled.

The maximum federal SSI payment in 2026 is $994 for an individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple. Actual payments can be lower because income and living arrangements affect the amount. The current limits are available on the SSA SSI payment page.

Who Gets Paid on September 3?

The September 3 payment applies primarily to people who began receiving Social Security before May 1997.

Certain beneficiaries who receive both Social Security and SSI also follow the early-month schedule. Their SSI payment comes on September 1 and their Social Security payment follows on September 3.

People in this group do not use the birthday-based Wednesday calendar.

    September 9 Payment

The first birthday-based payment arrives on Wednesday, September 9.

The date applies to eligible retirement, survivor and SSDI beneficiaries whose birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of any month.

The birth month does not determine the payment date. Someone born on February 4 and someone born on November 8 normally belong to the same payment group.

    September 16 Payment

The second round arrives on Wednesday, September 16.

Beneficiaries whose birthday falls from the 11th through the 20th are scheduled for this payment date.

If someone receives benefits based on another person’s work record, such as certain spouses, survivors or dependents, the relevant birthday can be the birthday of the worker whose earnings record supports the benefit.

September 23 Is the Final Regular Payment

The final birthday-based round for September is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23.

It covers beneficiaries with birthdays from the 21st through the 31st.

No additional regular payment is scheduled after September 23. The next SSI payment arrives on October 1.

How Much Could a September Social Security Check Be?

The payment calendar determines when money arrives, not how much each person receives.

Social Security retirement benefits depend on lifetime covered earnings and the age at which benefits begin. The 2026 cost-of-living adjustment increased Social Security and SSI benefits by 2.8%.

The Social Security Administration estimated that the average retired worker benefit would rise to about $2,071 per month in January 2026.

    62
    $2,969

    Full retirement age
    $4,152

    70
    $5,181

The SSA lists the current maximum retirement benefit examples in its retirement benefit guidance.

The $5,181 Figure Does Not Apply to Every Retiree

The $5,181 maximum applies to someone who begins retirement benefits at age 70 in 2026 after earning at or above the Social Security taxable maximum for the required number of years. Most retirees receive considerably less because their earnings history and claiming age are different.

Our guide to the Social Security earnings limits for 2026 explains another rule that is important for people who continue working before full retirement age.

September Payments Do Not Include the 2027 COLA

September benefits still use the 2.8% COLA that took effect for 2026. The 2027 increase has not been announced yet, and the final figure will depend on CPI-W data from July, August and September.

Our latest Social Security COLA projection for 2027 tracks the estimate as new inflation data arrives.

The Social Security Administration is also expected to announce new earnings limits, taxable wage figures and other 2027 thresholds. We have a separate breakdown of the major Social Security changes expected for 2027.

What to Do if Your September Payment Is Missing?

A deposit that does not appear first thing in the morning is not automatically missing. Banks and financial institutions can post federal payments at different times during the day.

Recipients should first confirm that they are checking the correct payment date and then contact their bank if an expected direct deposit has not appeared.

If the payment remains missing, beneficiaries can contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or check their payment information through a my Social Security account.
