The Social Security Administration (SSA) in the United States will issue September 2026 retirement benefits on its regular schedule. It will begin issuing the payments on Tuesday (Sept. 1) with Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The final payment for the month will be released on Wednesday (Sept. 23).
The payment dates are primarily based on the beneficiaries’ birth date and the benefits they receive. The SSI payments are issued on the first business day of the month. If the day falls on a weekend, the payment will be issued on the last weekday before the usual pay date.
Beneficiaries who started receiving retirement benefits before May 1997 or are eligible for both SSI and Social Security will receive their payments on Thursday (Sept. 3). This is because SSA issued Social Security payments on the third day of every month till June 1997.
However, the single-day payment method became unwieldy as the number of beneficiaries increased yearly. So, the administration spread payment distribution over four days. Currently, SSA distributes retirement benefits to more than 75 million citizens in the U.S. every month.

How to Check?
Beneficiaries can review their Social Security account to check whether they received the money or whether the credited amount is correct. If the payment didn’t get credited immediately, an individual can wait a few business days and check the bank balance again before contacting SSA, as bank processing can be delayed.
A beneficiary can contact SSA if they did not receive the payment within three business days. Keep the following documents ready before contacting the administration for a missing payment:
- Social Security Number
- Bank Account Details
- Payment Date
- Recent Change of Address
- Payee Status of Representative or Bank
Social Security payments, an American government-initiated program, are designed to help individuals who are disabled, unemployed, dealing with illness, have lost a primary earner, or are retired. People who are struggling receive regular government funding for their basic needs. Millions of Americans depend on Social Security payments to cover their medical bills, housing costs, and everyday expenses.
Social Security retirement beneficiaries are people with at least 40 work credits and are at least 62 years old. To be eligible for the retirement benefits, an individual must have nearly 10 years of work experience while paying Social Security taxes. People with disabilities and the family members of eligible workers may also receive Social Security payments.
