The Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program.

Established on August 1, 1956, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Social Security Amendments of 1956, the program now supports 8 million Americans.
Under Commissioner Frank Bisignano, the SSA has achieved several historic improvements:
- Wait times have decreased by more than 25% since FY 2024, overall wait times have decreased by 47 days.
- Hearing wait times have reached historic lows, more than 90% of customer hearings are conducted through virtual service channels, improving access efficiency.
- Disability examiners are processing 13% more cases per week than in FY 2025. Administrative Law Judges are completing nearly 20% more cases per day and are on track to complete 25,000 more cases by the end of FY 2026 compared to FY 2025.
- The Disability Examiner Decisional Authority (DEDA) have made 150,000 expedited decisions since 2025.
Americans have been contributing to the social security trust fund for years with the assurance that they would be able to count on benefits when they retire. I will never support pulling the rug out from Americans that contributed to these benefits for decades and now rely on them in retirement. I will keep pushing changes that protect these programs, keep our commitments to seniors, and preserve retirement security for future generations.
