EU bans destruction of unsold clothing to cut fashion waste

The European Union has banned large companies from destroying unsold clothing, footwear and accessories to reduce textile waste and encourage more sustainable fashion practices.

The decision comes as the European Environment Agency estimates that 4 to 9 per cent of textile products placed on the European market are destroyed before ever being used, representing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of textiles every year.

Businesses must now prioritise resale, donation, repair and recycling, with the new rules aiming to reduce overproduction and improve accountability across the fashion industry. Read more here.

Australian mum welcomes incredibly rare identical quadruplets

Jenitar Sau Na’amoana, 34, has given birth to an extraordinarily rare set of identical quadruplet girls after a naturally conceived pregnancy believed to have odds of around one in 15 million.

The babies were born at 28 weeks and four days via caesarean section at Brisbane’s Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Doctors say all four girls are doing well in neonatal intensive care, while their mother is recovering well following the high-risk pregnancy. Read more here.

Off duty firefighter’s quick actions save three children after boating accident

Earlier this month, off duty Texas firefighter Jason Horne rescued three children trapped beneath a capsized boat during Fourth of July celebrations at Alvarado Park Lake, Midlothian.

Drawing on more than 20 years of emergency service experience, Horne repeatedly dived beneath the overturned boat and performed CPR on two of the children, helping save all three lives.

The children have since made a full recovery, with the grateful family thanking Horne for his life saving actions. Read more here.

New monkey species identified deep in the Congo rainforest

Researchers have identified a rare orange lipped monkey living deep within the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Lomami National Park as a newly discovered species, following years of fieldwork and genetic analysis.

Known locally as the “Likweli”, the elusive primate is only the fifth new African monkey species discovered in the past 75 years.

Scientists say the discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of the Congo Basin and the urgent need to protect its forests from habitat loss and hunting. Read more here.
