Parents of babies born in the United States during a special six-month period in 2026 may receive a unique version of one of the country’s most important documents. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a limited-edition Freedom 250 Social Security card to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary.
The commemorative card is being issued to children born between July 2 and December 31, 2026. While it will look almost the same as a regular Social Security card, the special edition includes the official Freedom 250 logo in black ink.

The marking recognizes that the child was born during the nation’s 250th year and creates a historic keepsake for families.
The card was introduced as part of the Freedom 250 celebrations, which highlight significant moments in American history. According to the SSA, the initiative also recognizes the role Social Security has played in the country for more than nine decades.
Despite its special design, the Freedom 250 Social Security card does not provide any additional government benefits, payments, or special privileges. It has the same purpose and legal function as a standard Social Security card, including identifying the holder’s Social Security number for employment, tax records, and other official purposes.
How can families receive the Freedom 250 Social Security card?
Eligible families do not need to complete a separate application to receive the commemorative card. The special cards are only issued through the SSA’s Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program, which allows parents to request a Social Security number for their newborn during the birth registration process.
The EAB program operates through partnerships between the SSA, hospitals, state vital records offices, birthing centers, and licensed midwives.
When parents complete the normal birth registration paperwork, they can request a Social Security number, and eligible babies born during the qualifying period will receive the commemorative version of the card.
There is no additional cost for families, and the SSA says producing the limited-edition cards will not create extra costs for taxpayers. However, the Freedom 250 designation is only available on the original card issued through the EAB program.
If the card is later lost, stolen, or damaged and a replacement is requested, the new card will not include the special logo.
The SSA has also issued a warning about possible scams connected to the commemorative cards. Parents should be aware that the agency will never call, text, or email asking for payment to receive the special card.
Families do not need to pay a fee, register separately, or provide additional personal details beyond what is already collected during the standard birth registration process.
Since its launch in 1987, the Enumeration at Birth program has helped millions of newborns receive Social Security numbers quickly and efficiently. The Freedom 250 card adds a symbolic touch to that process, giving children born during this historic anniversary year a unique reminder of the moment they entered the world.
