WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — As Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, health experts continue encouraging men to prioritize not only their physical health but their mental health as well.

Research has shown regular physical activity is one of the easiest ways to improve overall mood, making exercise one tool people can use to support their mental well-being.

Working out helps reduce stress, improve mood, and increase energy, but it also gives people a chance to focus on themselves.

“Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health,” Nate said. “There are still stigmas that, you know, I feel like men should simply push their challenges on their own, but you know, asking for help and taking care of yourself is a sign of strength as well.”

Parkwest Fitness in West Lafayette is seeing those benefits firsthand.

Employees say that while members often come in hoping to get stronger physically, many leave talking about something else—the way they feel mentally after a workout.

“I think mental fortitude is part of that confidence aspect, right, like in their everyday lives,” Bastian said. “They find strength in themselves, and that shows at work, at home, and in all kinds of aspects.”

Staff says creating a welcoming environment is especially important during Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, reminding people that taking care of themselves includes both their mind and body.

“I mean, life is stressful in many different ways,” Bastian said. “I think, like you said, a healthy outlet is important. Maybe it’s just like a mental day, you come, get the sauna, or just walk on the treadmill, whatever it may be. This is one of the perfect things that, you said, is very important.”

While Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month may be coming to a close, the message remains clear—an investment in physical health is also an investment in mental well-being.
